This initiative aims to raise awareness of responsible travel and to promote environmentally conscious decisions by tourists. The focus is on train travelers and encouragement to use bicycles and public transport.

experiences from the pilot project
In 2024, a pilot project was already carried out as part of the Copenpay initiative, which provided promising results. In this survey, 500 volunteers, which collected garbage in the harbor waters and received an hour of free boating. A total of 75,000 tourists took part in this campaign, which led to an increase in bicycle rentals by remarkable 29 percent. The participants collected several tons of garbage and 98 percent stated that they wanted to recommend the idea, which underlines the positive feedback.
The expansion of Copenpay does not aim to increase the number of tourists, but to change the thinking of travelers to more environmentally friendly decisions. The initiative now includes 90 participating institutions in Copenhagen and the surrounding area, including museums and the popular ski slope Copenhill. The city hopes that the measures not only have a better commitment of the visitors, but also a reduction in CO2 emissions, which are significantly caused by tourism.
The incentives that Copenhagen offers as part of this campaign are diverse and contribute to promoting a sustainable travel culture in the city. The city hopes that the guests will remain longer due to the environmentally friendly approach and at the same time develop a better awareness of the beauties and the appreciation of the environment.
