Copenhagen rewards environmentally conscious tourists: CopenPay starts in summer!

In the summer of 2025, Copenhagen will be sending a strong signal for sustainable travel and expanding the already established “CopenPay” campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about responsible travel and encourage environmentally conscious choices among tourists. The focus is particularly on train travelers and encouraging the use of bicycles and public transport.

The campaign spans nine weeks, from June 17 to August 17, and includes a variety of incentives for tourists who actively engage in environmentally friendly activities. Rewards include cultural experiences, free rental bikes, yoga sessions, guided tours, and discounted admission to numerous facilities.

Experiences from the pilot project

A pilot project under the CopenPay initiative was already carried out in 2024, which delivered promising results. This survey involved 500 volunteers who collected trash in the harbor waters in exchange for an hour of free boating. A total of 75,000 tourists took part in this campaign, which led to an increase in bike rentals by a remarkable 29 percent. The participants collected several tons of garbage and 98 percent said they would recommend the idea to others, which underlines the positive feedback.

CopenPay's expansion is not aimed at increasing the number of tourists, but at changing travelers' mindsets towards more environmentally friendly choices. The initiative now includes 90 participating institutions in Copenhagen and the surrounding area, including museums and the popular Copenhill ski slope. The city hopes that the measures will not only improve visitor engagement, but also reduce CO2 emissions, which are significantly caused by tourism.

The incentives Copenhagen offers through this campaign are diverse and help promote a sustainable travel culture in the city. The city hopes that by adopting an eco-friendly approach, guests will stay longer while developing a greater awareness of the beauty and appreciation of the environment.
