Creative visions of the future: Children design rainbow robot space ice cream in Berlin

The renowned photographer Jan von Holleben teamed up with 489 primary school children in an innovative project to capture their creative ideas for the future. The resulting works were brought to life as part of the “horizonte Zingst” photo festival and can now be seen in Berlin. The exhibition is entitled “Rainbow Robot Space Ice” and can be seen at “ff – freiraum für fotografie” until June 15, 2025. What's special about this project: It's not a spontaneous social media-style flash mob, but rather a well-thought-out artistic initiative.

The children from the towns of Zingst, Prerow, Barth and Ribnitz-Damgarten have put their visions of the future on paper in the form of spectacular and imaginative ideas. The concepts designed by the children include a floating waste recycling machine, popsicles on the moon, jet shoes and fair voting robots. These creative approaches address important issues such as resource management, what will be too much and too little in the future, and what needs to be reinvented. The children's commitment reflects their hope and ingenuity.

Details about the exhibition

The photographs that can be seen in the exhibition show around 100 children from the region who visualized their ideas under the guidance of Jan von Holleben. This creative collaboration was presented in a large beach exhibition in Zingst from May 23, 2025. The photo flash mob, the central event in Berlin, took place from June 3rd to 15th, 2025 and was kicked off with a PHOTO TALK on the occasion of the exhibition opening on June 3rd, 2025 at 7 p.m.

Jan von Holleben, born in southern Germany in 1977, has worked for numerous international magazines, museums and government institutions over the years. His training includes studying special education in Freiburg and the theory and history of photography in Great Britain. The “Rainbow Robot Space Ice” exhibition was funded by the Fund for Western Pomerania and Eastern Mecklenburg, which underlines the regional support for this inspiring project.
