Art with a message: New graffiti on Sylt criticizes capitalism!

In a fresh creative project, a new graffiti artwork was inaugurated today on the island of Sylt. The mural is located between the Wilhelminen fountain and a health food store and represents a platform on which young people can express their views and thoughts about their home island. The original completion date for the work of art was actually in October 2024, but had to be postponed due to bad weather and the absence of illness of the art teacher in charge, it is reported Moin.de.

The two artists David Kory and Curtis, who are members of the “The Urbanists” association, were finally able to successfully complete the creative work. The mural not only reflects the beauty of Sylt, with classic motifs such as the beach, surfboard and seagulls, but also allows a critical look at social injustices. Among other things, a figure is depicted that is modeled on a rich snot in the shape of an octopus, and there are symbols for topics such as repression and capitalism.

Social and artistic messages

Artist Curtis emphasizes that the work of art consciously criticizes grievances such as sell-outs and social inequality. These critical representations are intended to stimulate thought and initiate discussions about the changes on the island. Tessa Heyde from SMG has already emphasized the visual enhancement of the facade, which shows that graffiti can definitely be viewed as an art form to beautify public space.

The total costs of the project are in the mid four-digit range and were financed by the Sylt Marketing Society (SMG) and the “Living Democracy” funding program. The collaboration leads to a visible appreciation of art and the opinions of young people, who are heard here through their creativity.

The urbanists have successfully implemented similar initiatives in the past, such as the Graffiti Battle in 2014, which provided a platform for graffiti artists to develop creatively. Further details about these projects can be found on the Urbanists website: The urbanists.
