Slowest island railway in the Republic: Wangerooge beckons with charm!

Wangerooge, the picturesque East Frisian North Sea island, enchants its visitors not only with its untouched nature, but also with a special way of getting around. On this car-free island, which has around 1,000 inhabitants, the island railway is the only means of transport between the jetty in the southwest and the island village, over a distance of just four kilometers. [Süddeutsche] reports that the island railway's first trip took place on July 3, 1897. Despite decades of history, the technology remains traditional: the course is still set manually.

The island railway and the four associated ferries are part of the DB Long-distance transport division. An impressive 25,000 tons of cargo, including food and other goods, are transported annually. In addition, around 200,000 holiday guests use the train every year to travel to the island and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Travel to the island

The journey to Wangerooge is usually via the ferry from Harlesiel. This crossing, which takes about an hour, is dependent on the tides. Ships operate on a “sliding” schedule, with flood priority being given priority. Interestingly, flooding occurs with a delay of about 50 minutes every day. The ferries leave from Harlesiel, cross the bed of the Harle and reach their destination safely through marked channels. Seabirds, especially seagulls, often accompany passengers during the crossing. The swell increases towards the north, creating an authentic North Sea experience.

Regular ferry and island train tickets are available for overnight guests at a price of 43 euros. Wangerooge offers a total of 6,000 guest beds in various price ranges, making the island an attractive destination for those seeking relaxation. Guests can be assured of getting from the mainland to the village in around 90 minutes. Especially in the high season, which lasts from the end of July to the beginning of August, it is advisable to book beach chairs in advance, as the beach is a maximum of 15 minutes' walk from the accommodation.

Public transport and leisure activities

Wangerooge's car-free concept encourages the use of bicycles and the island railway, which puts relaxation at the forefront. Apart from the unique journey by ferry, which allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the North Sea, there are also other island railways on the East Frisian Islands, such as on Borkum, Langeoog and Spiekeroog.

The combination of traditional transport, untouched nature and a car-free environment makes Wangerooge a special place for holidaymakers looking for peace and relaxation. The charm of the island and the uncomplicated journey offer the ideal conditions for a relaxing stay on the North Sea.
