Mediterranean dreams: Mia Münster's watercolors in the Museum St. Wendel
The eagerly awaited exhibition “Longing for the South” opens at the St. Wendel Museum on July 18, 2025. This shows the travel pictures of the artist Mia Münster, who lived from 1894 to 1970. The focus is on works from the 1950s that impressively capture the Mediterranean flair of Spain, France and Italy. Visitors can look forward to a journey through these southern countries until August 17, 2025.
Mia Münster's art style combines watercolors and gouaches, which capture not only the landscapes, but also the special lighting moods and architectural details of the Mediterranean countries. These works are a reflection of the newly gained freedom to travel during the time of the economic miracle in Germany, which was characterized by a sense of cultural optimism. In the 1950s, society experienced a phase of cosmopolitanism and a desire for expression.
Artistic characteristics and styles
The combination of Cubism and Expressionism characterizes Münster's work particularly stylistically, making her a typical representative of the Saarland artists of the post-war period. The influence of these movements can be traced through their works. An outstanding example is the gouache “Southern Port City with Palm Trees”, which impressively depicts the artist's creativity and visions.
The exhibition is not only a review of Münster's work, but it also provides an expanded insight into her career to date within the museum's permanent exhibition. This makes the show a special opportunity for art and history enthusiasts to learn more about the artist's development.
Interactive workshops for young and old
To keep Mia Münster's creative spirit alive, the museum is offering support through two summer holiday workshops during the exhibition. The workshop “Holiday Pictures in Watercolor” will take place on August 13, 2025 and is aimed at children and young people aged 10 to 14. On the following day, August 14, 2025, children aged 8 to 12 can take part in the “Color and Shape Experiments” workshop. In both events the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 10 people and prior registration is required. Material costs of 3 euros each apply.
