Mekong Delta is booming: tourism promotion between Can Tho and Hue is growing!
A major conference on promoting tourism in the Mekong Delta region was held in Hue on May 22, 2025. Major issues related to tourism development were discussed under the leadership of Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Authority. Together with leaders from Can Tho and Hue, the event showcased innovative tourism products and strategies to position the region as an attractive travel destination. The conference is part of the Hue National Tourism Year 2025 and aims to strengthen the Mekong Delta region's tourism image and promote tourist attraction.
Participants at the conference included Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh (Hue), Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep (Can Tho), as well as representatives from the tourism departments of several provinces in the Mekong Delta and the North Central Coast, including Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Tri. The cooperation between these regions is intended to improve the networking of tourism companies, the development of product routes and the increase in flight frequency between Can Tho and the central region. In particular, the possibility of a direct flight between Can Tho and Phu Bai (Hue) is being examined.
Joint efforts to promote tourism
A key outcome of the conference was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the tourism associations of Can Tho and Hue. This agreement is intended to improve cooperation in the joint marketing strategy and highlight the specific strengths of the locations. Mr. Ha Van Sieu appreciated Can Tho's commitment and emphasized the importance of the cultural identity of the two regions for sustainable tourism.
The Mekong Delta region plans to attract over 52 million tourists and generate revenue of nearly VND62 trillion (US$2.43 billion) in 2024. To achieve these goals, local authorities will strive to innovate and improve the quality of ecotourism and cultural products. This is in line with the focus on environmentally friendly and climate change-adapted tourism offerings that highlight the unique characteristics of regional attractions.
Individual strengths and tourist highlights of the provinces
Can Tho, the central heart of the Mekong Delta, aims to realize its potential as a regional tourism center. The city focuses on developing unique tourism products, including urban waterway ecotourism, MICE tourism and various cultural experiences. The priority here is to invest in garden-based waterway tours and visits to the famous floating markets.
Additionally, numerous historical and cultural sites are preserved in Dong Thap Province, promoting local agricultural products and craft villages ideal for agritourism. Huynh Thi Hoai Thu, director of Dong Thap Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, announced that the province aims to continue developing innovative services to improve visitors' experiences associated with 65 tourist attractions.
Long An, strategically located at the gateway to the Mekong Delta, welcomed over 2 million visitors in 2024 and plans to develop specialized tourism products, including eco-wellness tourism and flood season exploration offerings. Huynh Van Son, vice chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, emphasizes the need for additional investment to develop river tourism in a sustainable way.
The Mekong Delta markets' efforts to promote regional tourism demonstrate how consciously they are taking responsibility for sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. Central to this is the close cooperation and networking of the individual provinces, which together want to present the attractiveness and diversity of the region.
