New flags on Holland's beaches: safety and clarity for holidaymakers!
From summer 2025, a new flag system will be introduced on Dutch beaches. This is intended to increase safety and improve the understandability of the flags for bathers. Loud Lokalkompass.de This system aims to establish consistent colors and symbols to minimize confusion. The initiative is necessary because every year a large number of tourists from different countries flock to the beaches who are not familiar with the previous flags.
Under the new flags, the red and yellow flag will continue to indicate the guarded swimming area. The yellow flag means “Caution, it can be dangerous”, for example due to strong currents. A bathing ban is signaled by the red flag. The new flags also include ones that draw attention to environmental issues and jellyfish. The aim of these measures is to increase the safety of bathers and to improve cooperation between surfers, swimmers and other beach visitors. In addition, the number of trash cans on busy beaches will be increased and smoking will be banned in certain areas.
Clear symbols and multilingualism
The new flags will be provided with simple symbols to further increase comprehensibility. For example, a crossed out air mattress will indicate the risk, while a specific sign will indicate the dangers of jellyfish. Informative boards explaining the meaning of the flags will be set up in Dutch, German and English to ensure wider understanding. An investigation by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam showed that many visitors often misinterpreted the previous flags, which in some cases led to dangerous situations, such as ruhr24.de reported.
A few important flags and their meanings are:
- Rot-gelbe Flagge: Rettungsschwimmer überwachen den Strandabschnitt.
- Rote Flagge: Lebensgefahr – Baden verboten.
- Gelbe Flagge: Baden auf eigene Gefahr, nicht empfohlen.
- Weiße Flagge mit blauem Fragezeichen: Ein vermisstes Kind wurde gefunden; Eltern sollten sich bei der Rettungsstation melden.
