New gas testing requirement for campers: safety or vacation at risk?

From June 19, 2025, new regulations for gas systems in camping vehicles will come into force. This decision aims to increase the safety of cooking, cooling and heating in motorhomes and caravans in order to avoid numerous accidents. The initiative follows alarming reports of accidents caused by gas leaks and explosions and aims to ensure that all LPG-equipped vehicles are regularly inspected.

The changed regulation is now part of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). From this date, mobile homes, caravans and caravans must undergo a so-called gas test every two years. This test must be carried out by certified professionals (G-607) and the cost of the test ranges from 40 to 80 euros.

Consequences for non-compliance

The new requirements are not just a question of safety, but also have clear consequences. Campsites will no longer be allowed to allow vehicles without a valid gas test from June 20, 2025. In addition, owners who do not comply with the inspection obligation must expect fines. These range from 15 euros if the deadline is exceeded by more than 2 to 4 months to 60 euros if the deadline is exceeded by more than 8 months. In the worst case, the vehicle can even be immobilized.

The test usually lasts between 20 and 45 minutes and is independent of the general inspection (HU). Non-portable, permanently installed gas appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, heaters and hot water boilers are checked. Transportable devices such as camping grills are not affected by this regulation. Newer vehicles, on the other hand, must pass the gas test before they are put into operation for the first time.

Technological developments

In an age in which more and more electric and solar-powered camping vehicles are coming onto the market, it can be observed that, just like the gas systems of the older models, they require careful inspection. Vehicles without gas appliances are not affected by the new regulation and provide a sustainable alternative for those who enjoy camping.

For camping lovers, there is a lot to consider in order to start the summer season carefree. If you get the gas tested in good time, you can prevent unpleasant surprises and enjoy your next vacation to the fullest.

Those interested can find further information on the websites of the ADAC as well as the German Liquefied Gas Association and the Central Association of Body and Vehicle Technology. The regulation ensures that the safety of campers is not neglected and guarantees that the popular recreational vehicles can be used safely.
