In a current survey by t-online, which was carried out among 7,115 readers, the Baltic Sea coast was voted the most popular holiday region in Germany. Around 36 percent of Germans, which corresponds to around 20 million people, spent their main vacation in Germany last year. The Baltic Sea coast received 38.4 percent of the votes, which corresponds to 2,729 participants. Compared to the survey two years ago, the Baltic Sea coast remains the clear winner, although the proportion has fallen slightly (38 percent at the time).
The North Sea coast follows in second place with 25.4 percent of the vote, which corresponds to 1,804 participants. This region is particularly popular with Germans. According to Statista, around 6.5 percent of Germans vacationed on the North Sea coast in 2024.
Popular holiday regions at a glance
In the t-online survey, the following regions took the top five places:

- 2. Nordseeküste: 25,4% (1.804 Stimmen)
- 3. Berchtesgadener Land: 6,4% (453 Stimmen)
- 4. Bodenseeregion: 5,8% (416 Stimmen)
- 5. Schwarzwald: 3,4% (246 Stimmen)
In 2023, the North Sea coast received 19.8 percent of the vote, while the Allgäu and Lake Constance received 12.9 percent and 7.4 percent. The Baltic Sea coast therefore remains a clear winner in the hearts of holidaymakers.
Attractiveness of the North Sea
But the North Sea coast also has a lot to offer. It stretches over around 621 kilometers, from Lower Saxony to the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, and includes the popular East Frisian and North Frisian island chains, with Sylt as the best-known holiday island. In 2024, Sylt alone recorded around 900,000 guest arrivals and almost 4.8 million overnight stays. On average, guests stay for just under a week and enjoy Sylt's famous long beaches, which stretch over around 40 kilometers.
Holiday apartments are particularly in demand during the high season in the summer months. In January 2024, around 75 percent of the holiday apartments on Amrum were fully booked for the summer. Sankt Peter-Ording also attracts many holidaymakers with around 1.7 million overnight stays and around 312,700 guest arrivals and is known for its extensive beaches, which receive high Google ratings.
The Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been protected since 2009, also attracts many nature lovers. It includes three national parks and covers approximately 700,000 hectares, where visitors can view local wildlife, including gray seals. The North Sea is also valued for water sports and offers numerous surfing opportunities, with there being eight surfing schools on Sylt and Föhr. Cyclists also appreciate the region; In 2023, 4.6 percent of cyclists chose the North Sea in Lower Saxony as their destination.
