Everything you need to know about hiking on the Pergasingan Hill without a guide. From the search for the starting point to hiking information to what you can expect above!

Pergasingan Hill or Bukit Pergasingan is an epic hike in the small mountain village of Sembalun. It is possible to take the Pergasingan Hill hike without a guide if they are pretty safe on steep paths. However, remember that many locals depend on tourism income. So if you would rather have a locals point up the way up, I recommend booking a guide by asking your host family. Otherwise, if you absolutely like an adventure without a lead, read on.

Do I have to stay in Sembalun to hike Pergasingan Hill?

Although it is not the most tourist place in Lombok, there are so many options for adventure in Sembalun that I would definitely recommend staying here. I stayed here for three days when we climbed the Pergasingan Hill, explored rice and strawberry fields, found viewpoints such as Bukit Selong and even discovered some nearby waterfalls. Below you will find a short list of the best accommodation opportunities near the Pergasingan Hill.

My Sembalun accommodation: Radiyah Guesthouse This is one of the cheapest accommodation opportunities in Sembalun. I would definitely recommend it. The rooms are small but very clean and have everything you need. There is unlimited free coffee and tea as well as a free breakfast. The owner is extremely helpful and organizes a motorcycle for you for 50,000 IDR per day.

Best style accommodation: Sembalun Kita Cottage This is probably the place I would have booked if I hadn't stayed in the Radiyah. You have great reviews, inexpensive rooms and large beds. It includes a free breakfast that is classified as "very good" on Booking.com

Inexpensive hotel: Rinjani Hill Hoteldieses Hotel is for travelers who prefer a bit of modern comfort and still want to keep a reasonable budget. The Hill Hotel offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and hills, a free breakfast and the employees organize their reception from trekking excursions to Pergasingan Hill, Rinjani and Bukit Selong.

Do I need a leader to hike Pergasingan Hill?

If you skipped the above intro, the short answer is no. This simple guide brings you to the top of the Pergasingan hill without a guide. However, if you have the money left and want to support local tourism, I would suggest paying a guide who brings you to the top.

I decided to climb the Pergasingan hill without a guide because I had just ended the Rinjani crater hike the day before and wanted to go on an unfortunate hike. Since I already lived in Sembalun, it was easy for me to wake up before sunrise and go to the starting point of the hiking trail.

If you don't stay in Sembalun, you can ride here from Senaru or Senggigi. However, the street is a bit bumpy. In this case, I would suggest simply book a Pergasingan Hill Trek online, which includes a quick breakfast, transport and a trekking guide.

hiking on the pergasing hill without a guide

The hike to the Pergasingan Hill takes about 1.5 hours to reach the summit and about 1 hour on the way down. The exact starting point is conveniently spotted on Google Maps as a "Pergasingan Hill - Hiking Start Point". You reach a small village where a tourism officer asks you about your entry fee. From here a narrow dirt road leads around some strawberry fields and finally to a dodgy bamboo bridge.

Pergasingan Hill admission price 2019: 50,000 IDR per person Pergasinghan Hill Höhe: 1750 m

As soon as you cross the bridge, the path becomes steeper immediately when you start climbing the Pergasingan Hill. Once you have found the trail, you can no longer miss it.

The first section is steep and sandy. When you come to sunrise on a good day, you can see how the Rinjani summit slowly lights up orange while the fog is dissolved over the carpet of rice fields underneath.

After the first climb, the path becomes flatter and leads through an area with dense trees and bushes before it finally becomes steeper again.

It is difficult to say where the actual tip of the Pergasingan Hill is, since the comb seems to be extended for miles. However, you will quickly know that you are above when you find the campsites below a small hill with trees.

We continued when the sun opened along the ridge, where we found some additional viewpoints in the east. To my surprise, we also found some cows that seem to live up there!

Pergasingan Hill hike after the earthquake

Fortunately, Pergasingan Hill is still open for hiking after the earthquakes. It seems that the tracks have not been damaged at all, which is a good sign. However, tourism continues to recover. If you really want to hike on the Pergasingan Hill without a guide, I would suggest staying in Sembalun and supporting the community with host families and food.

View from the summit

From the tip of the Pergasingan Hill you have a wide view over the Sembalun rice field landscapes. At sunrise you can hear the oscillating rumbling of the morning prayers that hallen through the mountain valleys.

This viewpoint on the hill is also one of the best places to see the Rinjani summit. In fact, Sembalun is the starting point for all trekking activities for the summit.

Another option: Camping on the Pergasingan Hill

Although I haven't been on the Pergasingan Hill, it is another popular option to stay up there. If you have your own tent, you can camp without a guide on the Pergasingan Hill. Booking a camping trip is a good way to spend time with locals and other adventurous tourists!

When you camp up, experience both an epic sunrise and an epic sunset! The people with whom I talked about Pergasingan Hill said that the camp there far exceeds a morning hike up there!
