Pergasingan Hill or Bukit Pergasingan is an epic hike in the small mountain village of Sembalun. It is possible to do the Pergasingan Hill hike without a guide if you are fairly confident on steep trails. However, remember that many locals depend on tourism income. So if you prefer to have a local show you the way up, I recommend booking a guide by asking your host family. Otherwise, if you're dead set on a self-guided adventure, read on.

DO I HAVE TO STAY IN SEMBALUN TO HIKE PERGASINGAN HILL?

Although it's not the most touristy place in Lombok, there are so many opportunities for adventure in Sembalun that I would definitely recommend staying here for at least a few nights. I stayed here for three days as we climbed Pergasingan Hill, explored rice and strawberry fields, found viewpoints like Bukit Selong, and even discovered some nearby waterfalls. Below is a short list of the best accommodation options near Pergasingan Hill.

MY SEMBALUN ACCOMMODATION: Radiyah Guesthouse This is one of the most affordable accommodation options in Sembalun. I would definitely recommend her. The rooms are small but very clean and have everything you need. There is unlimited free coffee and tea, as well as free breakfast. The owner is extremely helpful and will arrange a motorbike for you for 50,000 IDR per day.

BEST INN-STYLE ACCOMMODATION: Sembalun Kita Cottage This is probably the place I would have booked if I hadn't stayed at Radiyah. They have great reviews, reasonably priced rooms, and large beds. It includes free breakfast, which is rated “very good” on Booking.com

BUDGET HOTEL: Rinjani Hill HotelThis hotel is for travelers who prefer a bit of modern comfort while still keeping to a reasonable budget. The Hill Hotel offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and hills, free breakfast and staff can organize trekking trips to Pergasingan Hill, Rinjani and Bukit Selong from their reception.

Do I need a guide to hike Pergasingan Hill?

If you skipped the intro above, the short answer is no. This easy guide will take you to the top of Pergasingan Hill without a guide. However, if you have the money to spare and want to support local tourism, I would suggest paying a guide to take you to the top.

I decided to climb Pergasingan Hill without a guide because I had just finished the Rinjani Crater hike the day before and wanted to do an unguided hike. Since I already lived in Sembalun, it was also easy for me to wake up before sunrise and walk to the trailhead.

If you're not staying in Sembalun, you can ride here yourself from Senaru or Senggigi. However, the road in is a bit bumpy to say the least. In this case, I would suggest simply booking a Pergasingan Hill Trek online which includes a quick breakfast, transport and a trekking guide.

Hiking Pergasingan Hill without a guide

The hike to Pergasingan Hill takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the summit and approximately 1 hour on the way down. The exact starting point is conveniently pinned on Google Maps as “PERGASINGAN HILL – hiking starting point”. You reach a small village where a tourism official asks you for your entrance fee. From here a narrow dirt path leads around some strawberry fields and eventually to a dodgy bamboo bridge.

PERGASINGAN HILL ENTRY PRICE 2019: 50,000 IDR PER PERSON PERGASINGHAN HILL HEIGHT: 1750 M

Once you cross the bridge, the trail immediately becomes steeper as you begin the climb up Pergasingan Hill. Once you've found the trail, you can't really miss it.

The first section is steep and sandy. If you come for sunrise on a good day, you can watch the peak of Rinjani slowly glow orange as the mist dissipates over the carpet of rice paddies below.

After the initial climb, the path becomes flatter and passes through an area of dense trees and bushes before finally steepening again to the summit.

It is difficult to say where the actual top of Pergasingan Hill is as the ridge appears to stretch for miles. However, you'll quickly know you're at the top when you find the campsites below a small hill with trees.

We continued as the sun rose along the ridge where we found some additional viewpoints to the east. To my surprise we also found some cows that seem to live up there!

Pergasingan Hill hike after the earthquake

Luckily, Pergasingan Hill is still open for hiking after the earthquakes. It appears that the tracks were not damaged at all, which is a good sign. However, tourism continues to recover. If you really want to hike Pergasingan Hill without a guide, I would suggest staying in Sembalun and supporting the community with homestays and food.

View from the summit

From the top of Pergasingan Hill you have a wide view over the rice paddy landscapes of Sembalun. At sunrise, you'll hear the reverberating rumble of morning prayers echoing through the mountain valleys.

This hilltop viewpoint is also one of the best places to see Rinjani peak. In fact, Sembalun is the starting point for all trekking activities to the peak.

Another option: camping on Pergasingan Hill

Although I didn't camp on Pergasingan Hill, staying up there is another popular option. If you have your own tent, you can camp on Pergasingan Hill without a guide. However, booking a camping trip is a great way to spend time with locals and other adventurous tourists!

When you camp at the top, you'll experience both an epic sunrise and sunset! The people I've spoken to about Pergasingan Hill have said that camping up there far beats a morning hike!
