Poseck demands a new US partnership: trip to Ohio!

Dayton, Ohio, USA - Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck is committed to a closer partnership between Germany and the USA before his trip to Dayton, Ohio. As the head of the Federal Council's delegation manager, he will take part in the spring conference of the NATO parliamentary meeting, which takes place from May 23 to 26, 2025. Poseck emphasizes the importance of stable cooperation in security issues and acknowledges that the US military presence in Europe is of central importance. Nevertheless, he also expresses criticism of the previous policy of the federal government among the United States, especially under President Donald Trump, and emphasizes that Germany has too often trusted the United States.

Poseck clearly speaks for an increase in German defense spending in relation to the gross domestic product. He refers to the claim of US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth that NATO members should in future be able to raise five percent of their economic output for defense. This claim has so far been rejected by Germany and other NATO countries. Germany, under the leadership of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has made it clear that a defensive budget of 200 billion euros is not on debate.

stability in times of uncertainty

Poseck sees the military support of Ukraine as essential and doubts about Vladimir Putin's willingness to close peace in the ongoing conflict. He plans to promote a continuation of the support from the USA and Germany in Dayton. He is aware that the military help that Europe provides Europe plays a crucial role. Last year the military aid of the European Union was even greater than that of the United States, which underlines the importance of European commitment.

While the situation in Ukraine remains tense, opinions within NATO are shared. While some countries, especially in the Baltic States and Poland, support the five percent goal, others, such as Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, demand a continuous increase in defense spending without specific targets. NATO boss Mark Rutte is looking for a compromise of "north of three percent", which illustrates divergence within the alliance.

Poseck will emphasize the need for Europe to take greater responsibility in military support for Ukraine. Against the background of informal consultations with the Ukrainian Defense Minister Rusten Umerow in Dayton, this discussion will only gain in importance. The status of NATO accession for Ukraine remains excluded for the time being, which underlines the challenges with which NATO is faced.

In a time of global uncertainty, the question of defense efforts and transatlantic relationships remains of crucial importance. Poseck faces the challenge of addressing these complex topics in the upcoming discussions in Dayton. His goal is to consolidate the partnership with the USA to develop a common strategy to improve security in Europe and the support of Ukraine.
