Poseck calls for new US partnership: trip to Ohio in sight!

Before his trip to Dayton, Ohio, Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck advocates for a closer partnership between Germany and the USA. As head of the Federal Council delegation, he will take part in the spring meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which will take place from May 23 to 26, 2025. Poseck highlights the importance of robust security cooperation and recognizes that the US military presence in Europe is crucial. Nevertheless, he also expresses criticism of the federal government's previous policy under the USA, especially under President Donald Trump, and emphasizes that Germany has relied on the USA too often.

Poseck is clearly in favor of increasing German defense spending in relation to gross domestic product. He is referring to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's demand that NATO members spend five percent of their economic output on defense in the future. This demand has so far been rejected by Germany and other NATO countries. Germany, under the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has made it clear that a defense budget of 200 billion euros is not up for debate.

Stability in times of uncertainty

Poseck sees military support for Ukraine as essential and doubts Vladimir Putin's willingness to make peace in the ongoing conflict. He plans to campaign in Dayton for continued support from the US and Germany. He is aware that the military aid that Europe provides to Ukraine plays a crucial role. Last year, European Union military aid was even greater than that of the United States, underscoring the importance of European engagement.

While the situation in Ukraine remains tense, opinions within NATO are divided. While some countries, particularly in the Baltics and Poland, support the five percent target, others, such as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, are calling for a continued increase in defense spending without specific targets. NATO chief Mark Rutte is looking for a compromise of “north of three percent,” highlighting the divergence within the alliance.

Poseck will emphasize the need for Europe to take greater responsibility in military support for Ukraine. This discussion will only become more important in light of informal consultations with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rusten Umerow in Dayton. NATO accession status for Ukraine remains out of the question for now, underscoring the challenges NATO faces.

At a time of global uncertainty, the issue of defense efforts and transatlantic relations remains crucial. Poseck faces the challenge of addressing these complex issues in the upcoming talks in Dayton. His goal is to strengthen the partnership with the US to develop a common strategy to improve security in Europe and support Ukraine.
