Cycling on Sylt: Discover the island by bike!

Cycling culture is flourishing on the island of Sylt and is appreciated by many holidaymakers. Silke Allenstein, 61 years old, is an example of the numerous visitors who have been exploring the island's attractions by bicycle for decades. Sylt impresses with a well-developed network of cycle paths totaling 200 kilometers, which leads through picturesque landscapes, including meadows, heath, cliffs and sandy beaches in the west and the Wadden Sea in the east. Cycling on Sylt is not tied to a specific season, which makes it possible to discover the beauty of the island at any time.

The cycle paths on Sylt lead over various surfaces such as asphalt as well as sand and gravel roads. During the ride, cyclists have the opportunity to observe the local wildlife and always enjoy a view of the mudflats and the dikes. Popular routes are the northern tour from Westerland to List and the southern tour to Hörnum. A circular tour over the Nössedeich and the Morsum cliff is particularly recommended. In addition, the Lister Ellenbogen, the northernmost point in Germany and a protected nature reserve, is a popular destination for cyclists.

Tips for cyclists

The demand for rental bicycles has increased significantly in recent years. There are currently over 40 bicycle rental stations on Sylt, which provide a total of around 11,000 bicycles, including around 2,300 e-bikes. This is also thanks to the Sylt Tourism Service, which offers e-bikes, e-scooters and e-scooters as well as e-cars at three locations. A new e-mobility center is also opening in Rantum, which led to the termination of a lease agreement for an existing bicycle rental company. Prices for rental bikes vary, with e-bikes available from the E-Mobility Center starting at 30 euros per day. Especially in the season between April and October, these centers are often 70 percent full.

Arrival by bike

Cyclists also have the opportunity to conveniently transport their bikes to Sylt. Taking bicycles with you on the regional train to Sylt is permitted, but depends on available space. Increased passenger numbers are to be expected, especially in the summer months, and it is advised to avoid trains from Westerland between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., as strollers and wheelchairs have priority here. In addition to the ticket, a day bike ticket is required to take the bike with you, and the bike spaces on the daily IC connections are limited, which makes prior reservation necessary.

Alternatively, bicycles can also be transported via the train's luggage service or the Hermes house-to-house service. It is easy to take bikes on the Sylt ferry, and both drivers and pedestrians can take their bikes with them without much effort.

Overall, Sylt offers cyclists numerous options to explore the beauty of the island and stay active at the same time. For anyone who wants to discover the island by bike, it offers perfect conditions for an unforgettable holiday.
