Spring awakening in the garden kingdom: 150 million euros future plan!

Wörlitz, Deutschland - On May 21, 2025, the Garden Empire Dessau-Wörlitz raises its voice to honor both birthday celebrations and the importance of its historical and cultural landscape. Roman Luckscheiter, General Secretary of the German UNESCO Commission, emphasizes how important the connection between the landscape and architecture is for the inheritance. He emphasizes that the aspects of art and enlightenment represent an inseparable part of this specific heritage, for which it is important to carefully preserve and mediate.

In a year that is dedicated to the anniversary, Anette Froesch from the Dessau-Wörlitz cultural foundation announces that the gardens should be re-opened. Harald Meller, provisional director of the cultural foundation, is reminiscent of the developments of the past 25 years and explains that the garden kingdom represents the most important landscape park in Europe.

Challenges and investments

However, the garden kingdom faces challenges due to climate change, floods and the energy crisis. These difficulties must be overcome in order to secure the value of the world heritage in the long term. By 2035, the construction of a new World Heritage Center is planned, which is to be realized by the federal government with an investment of 150 million euros.

In addition to the structural measures, a varied program is offered for the year, including exhibitions, cabaret and a very special attraction - a simulated volcanic eruption. In addition, a new garden kingdom app is introduced, which leads visitors through 120 cultural-historical stations in Wörlitzer Park. This app will not only provide information and videos, but will also be available in English and in easy language, which increases accessibility for all visitors.

Visitor numbers and cultural importance

Mayor Maik Strömer emphasizes the importance of the accessibility of the garden kingdom for the region. According to Prime Minister Haseloff, the gardens attracted countless million visitors. However, he realizes that many people visit the free gardens, but only a few go into the castles, which is a challenge for the cultural offer.

The garden kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz was recognized in 2000 as a UNESCO World Heritage and is the 24th World Heritage Site of Germany and the fourth in Saxony-Anhalt. It extends over 142 km² and comprises locks, gardens and parks, which were created in the 18th century by the Prince Franz von Anhalt-Dessau-inspired by English landscape parks. The important green areas include the Parks Luisium, Sieglitzer Berg, Georgium and Großkühnau.

The fusion of various artificial genuses ranging from antiquity to classicism is another characteristic characteristic of this cultural project. Wörlitz Castle, built between 1769 and 1773, is considered the first classicist building in German architectural history. In the region there are several UNESCO World Heritals within a radius of 35 kilometers.

As an outstanding example of landscape design and a source of education and moral education, the garden kingdom has the potential to inspire and train its visitors in the future.
