Winter tourism on Usedom has become increasingly popular in recent years. Loud MDR the number of overnight stays increased by 14 percent in the 2015/16 low season. Koserow is also planning to build a new public toilet for 500,000 euros in order to further improve the infrastructure. One investment that has already been completed is the pier in Koserow, which was completed in summer 2021 for around seven million euros.
Usedom primarily attracts visitors from the new federal states, with Saxony accounting for one in five guests. Michael Steuer, Managing Director of Usedom Tourismus GmbH, emphasizes that many of these visitors have a long-standing relationship with the island, often extending back to childhood.
Winter activities and experiences
The winter season on Usedom offers a variety of activities. The island, located on the Baltic Sea, is known not only for its 42 kilometers of beaches, but also for its calm and clear winter days, perfect for walks in the fresh air. The Usedom stand is up to 70 meters wide in some places. The imperial spas of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin, with their impressive spa architecture and historic pier, are particularly popular.
The Historical-Technical Museum in Peenemünde provides a deep insight into the history of rocket research. A visit to the local beach chair factory in Heringsdorf offers those interested the opportunity to pursue traditional craft techniques. In winter, cultural experiences are also an important part of the offer: visits to the theater, such as in “Die Blechbüchse – THE YELLOW THEATER Zinnowitz”, ensure varied evenings.
For gourmets, gastronomic highlights such as the Usedomer Brauhaus and fish dishes in Uwe's Fischerhütte are on the program. The Mellenthin moated castle, known for its restaurant and in-house brewery, also attracts many visitors.
