Tourism record in Schleswig-Holstein: 10.8 billion euros in sales!

Schleswig-Holstein will celebrate a remarkable peak in tourism sales in 2024. At around 10.8 billion euros, the industry was able to record an increase of around 400 million euros compared to the previous year. This development represents Schleswig-Holstein as an important economic factor in German tourism, as evidenced by the arrival of 9,416,790 guests. These figures reflect a stable overnight stay rate, which amounts to a total of 38,089,663 overnight stays.

The turnover consists of overnight tourism with 6.4 billion euros and day tourism with 4.4 billion euros. Economics Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen emphasizes the need to secure skilled workers as well as quality development and sustainable infrastructure, identifying the attraction and retention of skilled workers as key challenges for the industry. According to Madsen, investments in quality, innovation and infrastructure are essential to stay competitive.

Growth and challenges

The current figures show that tourism in Schleswig-Holstein was a positive year in 2024. While the number of arrivals increased by 1.1% compared to the previous year, the number of overnight stays remained stable. Spa and rehabilitation clinics in particular recorded growth of 3.9%. The hotel and other accommodation industries maintained their level, while campsites faced a decline of 2.3%.

In addition, Sparkasse President Oliver Stolz emphasizes that the stagnation of the German economy also has an impact on tourism in the north. The uncertainty among holidaymakers is inhibiting consumption, which is causing companies to act cautiously when making investments. In view of these challenges, Stolz is calling for effective measures to stimulate the industry, with the reduction of bureaucracy being cited as an important component.

Quality, innovation and guest surveys

The Schleswig-Holstein Tourism Association also points out the importance of quality for competitiveness. A recent guest survey shows a need for improvement in terms of price-performance ratio as well as environmental and social compatibility. However, positive feedback relates to the natural landscape, the welcoming culture and the balance between liveliness and overcrowding.

The aim of the extensive support provided by the state of Schleswig-Holstein for tourist businesses in setting up, expanding and modernizing is to continuously adapt the offers to the needs of the guests. The discussions about the binding nature of collective agreements within the industry also show that tourism must continue to be critically monitored and further developed. While the industry is thriving, ensuring stable and high quality remains an urgent task for the future.
