Storks in Rühstädt: A fascinating spectacle in the stork year!

Rühstädt, a charming little village in Brandenburg, is particularly known for its impressive number of storks. Every spring the majestic birds return and the village is home to the highest density of storks in Germany. Almost every house roof in Rühstädt has space for a stork's nest. Over 30 pairs of storks come to the region each year, with a record 44 pairs recorded in 1996 Travelbook reported.

The outstanding importance of storks for Rühstädt was recognized by the EuroNatur Foundation in 1996 when the village was given the title “European Stork Village”. Locals, especially the “Storchenclub Rühstädt”, are actively involved in the preservation of storks and their nests. Every year in March these nests are cleaned, replaced or, if necessary, removed using a lifting platform.

Natural living conditions

The region around Rühstädt offers ideal living conditions for the storks. The flooded floodplains of the Elbe in particular provide plenty of food. But it's not just storks that find a habitat here. Other animals such as deer, rabbits, geese and cranes also feel comfortable in this environment. In addition, a live cam in the stork house allows visitors to follow the raising of the young up close.

The stork festival on the last Saturday in July has a special meaning for the residents and guests of Rühstädt. There will be a colorful program that celebrates the close connection between people and the storks. From August, however, the stork population begins its long flight home to Africa, covering up to 10,000 kilometers.

Records and ringing

In 2024, Rühstädt experienced a record year with 25 pairs of storks counted - a sign of the successful return and settlement of these birds. The identity and age of the storks are monitored through regular ringing, an important measure for population research.

EuroNatur has honored a total of 15 stork villages in Europe, including village locations in Bulgaria, Poland and Macedonia. The initiative shows how important it is to protect and preserve the stork population throughout Europe and highlights Rühstädt's pioneering role as a European center for stork protection. Those interested can find further information about the European stork village and the activities on site at NABU Rühstädt.
