A walking guide to combining the Three Falls Circuit and the Tall Trees Walk to see everything Mount Field National Park has to offer in one easy, scenic loop route.
The lower rainforest section of Mount Field National Park is truly one of Tasmania's best rainforests. And the easiest way to experience all of the incredible natural scenery is the easy 6-kilometer loop known as the Three Falls Circuit.
This trail goes around the park, past three scenic rainforest waterfalls and also through the Tall Trees Walk to walk among some of the tallest flowering trees in the world.
In this blog post I want to inspire you to visit Mount Field National Park and strap in for this beautiful loop trail. I've put together all the information you need to know about how to get here, what to expect, and some tips for visiting the park.
Via the Three Falls Circuit and the Tall Trees Walk
The Three Falls Circuit and Tall Trees Walk form a loop of the lower rainforest section of Mount Field National Park. This hike is by far the best way to experience everything Mount Field National Park has to offer. The route is very well maintained and is mostly flat for the duration of the hike. However, there are some sections where you have to climb some wooden stairs.
Highlights of the Three Falls Circuit include:
- Russell Falls – Tasmaniens berühmtester Wasserfall
- Horseshoe Falls
- Tall Trees Walk – erleben Sie einige der höchsten blühenden Bäume der Welt, die Eucalypt Regnans
- Lady Barron fällt

How to get to Mount Field National Parkastas
Visitors wishing to hike the Three Falls Circuit must go to the visitor center at Mount Field National Park. This is located in Tasmania's Central Highlands about 70 kilometers northwest of Hobart.
The national park is connected by the Brooker and Lyell Highways and follows paved roads throughout. Expect approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Hobart.
Unfortunately there is no public transport that goes directly to Mount Field. However, if you find yourself in Hobart without a car or transportation, consider booking a full-day tour to Mount Field, which also includes a trip to Mount Wellington, Richmond and Bonorong.

Hiking trails in Mount Field National Park
Although this is by no means necessary for navigation, I have attached a hiking map of Mount Field National Park below. This should give you a better understanding of the route that encompasses the Three Falls Circuit.

The Three Falls Circuit
The first section of the Three Falls Circuit begins at the back of the visitor center (walk through or around). Like everything in this park, this trail is well signposted and very easy to navigate. Start by following signs toward Russell Falls.
Immediately after starting the hike, the paved path leads into a densely wooded eucalyptus rainforest. You'll pass towering eucalyptus trees, which are a good warm-up for how tall the trees will be on the later section of the Tall Trees Walk.

The main event: Russell Falls
Just 10 minutes into the hike you will reach the main event. Russell falls. This is one of Tasmania's most famous waterfalls and the centerpiece of Mount Field National Park.
This two-tiered waterfall is over 50 meters high and cascades down horizontal Permian siltstone and vertical sandstone columns.
There is a large viewing platform just below the waterfall where you can take photos and admire the view.

Horseshoe Falls
After taking a few minutes to admire the sights of Russell Falls, it's time to continue on the Three Falls Circuit to the next waterfall.

This section immediately after the Russell Falls viewing platform is a short but sharp climb up a wooden staircase. Once at the top of Russell Falls, you will see a sign indicating a 2-minute trail to Horseshoe Falls.

In my opinion, Horseshoe Falls doesn't get the treatment it deserves. No doubt it is foreshadowed by its larger, more famous downstream brother. This mini amphitheater is a photographer's dream. After a light rain, several gentle streams flow and join in a wide, circular clearing, swirling around fern-covered boulders.

Walk through tall trees
The next section of the Three Falls Circuit connects to the Tall Trees Walk, a section of eucalyptus forest that is home to some of the tallest flowering trees in the world.
alt=“EUCALUPT REGNANS, THE TALLEST TREES IN THE WORLD”>
Some of these trees are over 80 meters tall. There is also a permanently installed measuring device under some of the largest trees with an accompanying instruction board to help you learn how to calculate tree heights.
It's best to take your time on this section to really take in the ancient wonders of the Tall Trees Walk.

Lady Barron falls
Following the Tall Trees, the Three Falls Circuit continues along Lake Dobson Road and then re-enters an even denser section of rainforest. This can be considered about half of the loop route, and it is possible to complete it early here by returning to the visitor center via Lake Dobson Road or returning the same route.
Instead, I recommend continuing towards Lady Barron Falls, less than a kilometer away.

Lady Barron Falls is another beautiful cascade that is very impressive after heavy rain. This waterfall is on a separate tributary to the other waterfalls on this circuit and its flow tends to be more dependent on rainfall.

Return to Mount Field National Park Visitor Center
The final section of this short but beautiful rainforest loop winds up the gorge and follows Lady Barron Crrek to a short, sharp climb of wooden stairs.
This is probably the most difficult part of this easy circular hike. But don't worry, there is a bench upstairs for those who need to rest their legs.

Finally, the Three Falls Circuit ends by crossing a burned section of eucalyptus and ash forest before returning to the visitor center.
