World Heritage 2025: Thuringia invites you to travel through history and nature!

Mühlhausen, Deutschland - Thuringia will celebrate the world heritage on June 1, 2025, which is all about its unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In this region there are a total of five World Heritage titles, including the Hainich National Park, which is known for its old beech forests and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On this occasion, the various world sites have prepared special programs and tours to make the diversity and history of the region tangible.

Visitors to the Hainich National Park can take a guided hike through the world heritage area to experience impressive nature up close. The Wartburg near Eisenach, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1999, is highlighted in tourism together with Hainich as a "World Heritage Region". As part of free tours, guests have the opportunity to visit the Wartburg where Martin Luther translated the New Testament.

Erfurt and Weimar in focus

The city of Erfurt celebrated the awarding of the world heritage title for testimonies of the Jewish-medieval heritage in 2023. This includes, among other things, a ritual bath, the so -called Mikwewe. For the World Heritage Day, free tours through the old town are offered in Erfurt, which are positively accepted by the visitors. Since the appointment as a world heritage, the number of overnight stays in the city has increased by around 87,500 from 2023 to 2024, which also benefits gastronomy. Guided tours to important sites such as the old synagogue, the Mikwe and the stone house are well booked.

The city administration sees the world heritage title with a positive view, but is also aware of the associated responsibility and obligations. Necessary renovation measures in the old synagogue and the construction of a world heritage information and education center are planned. The gastronomic and tourist development is not only reflected in the number of visitors, but also in the increasing demand for cultural experiences.

Weimar, a city with two UNESCO World Heritals, will also come up with special offers on the World Heritage Day. These include the houses of Goethe and Schiller as well as the Bauhaus pattern house. The Weimar classic Foundation organizes guided special tours through the city palace and the Schlosspark Belvedere. However, these tours require the booking free tickets via the shop.

Mühlhausen and the historical context

Another historically important place in Thuringia is Mühlhausen, where there are important works of work by Thomas Müntzer. In the 16th century, he was committed to the liberation of farmers from serfdom and denounced social grievances at Allstedt Castle. The city of Mühlhausen has a well -preserved old town in which the Gothic Marienkirche, the second largest church in Thuringia, is located. The house of Thomas Müntzer is located southwest of the Marienkirche.

In addition, the city wall of Mühlhausen is almost completely preserved and measures 2.7 km. In front of the inner female gate there is a monument in honor of Müntzer, which was beheaded there after the lost battle near Frankenhausen in 1525. The Peasant War Museum in the Kornmarktkirche is reminiscent of this eventful story. The Kornmarktkirche itself was built by the Franciscans in the 13th century, which at that time happened against the resistance of the Order of German Knights.

Another cultural highlight is the panorama museum on the Schlachtberg near Bad Frankenhausen/Kyffhäuser, which is reminiscent of the battle near Frankenhausen. Here visitors can marvel at the impressive 360 ° painting "Early bourgeois revolution in Germany" by Werner Tübke, which points to an area of 1,722 m².

The world heritage in Thuringia offers an excellent opportunity to discover the rich cultural and historical treasures of the region and to honor the importance of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The numerous events and tours make this event a highlight for locals and tourists alike.
