Four German airports among the least punctual in Europe!

A recent analysis from Allianz Direct shows that European airports have been struggling with an alarming increase in delays in recent years. The period between 2020 and 2024 revealed clear trends: Luxembourg tops the list of the least punctual airports with an average delay of 48.87 minutes per flight. This emerges from the data that forms the basis for the collection of Picture represent.

Next in line are Naples in Italy with 27.94 minutes and Frankfurt in Germany, which takes third place with 23.36 minutes. What is particularly noteworthy is that four German airports are in the top ten of the least punctual airports in Europe. The numbers also show this: Nuremberg is in 7th place with an average delay of 19.43 minutes, followed by Leipzig-Halle in 8th place with 19.23 minutes and Cologne-Bonn in 9th place with 18.92 minutes delay.

Delays at record levels

In addition to the information presented, a report from the Performance Review Board for the Single European Sky reveals that almost one in two flights in Europe were delayed in the sunny travel months of 2024. Delays increased dramatically compared to previous years, with a 430% increase between 2021 and 2023 and a cumulative time of almost nine million minutes delayed, meaning an average delay of 13 minutes per delayed flight, according to word.

In Germany, delays have increased particularly at Munich Airport, where they increased from 0.54 to 1.18 minutes per flight. This is primarily attributed to a new air traffic control system. In other European countries, Spain, France and Greece, delays also increased significantly, including due to strikes and problems with air traffic control, necessitating major reform of the aviation sector.

The search for solutions

Ourania Georgoutsakou, managing director of Airlines for Europe, has stressed the urgency of reforming European airspace. Reducing delays could not only provide relief for travelers, but also reduce CO₂ emissions by 7-10%. Luxair also supports the initiative to modernize air traffic management and thus improve punctuality.

As the data clearly shows, flights in the morning would have the best chance of departing on time. The list of the least punctual airports in Europe, which Allianz Direct recently published, reflects this issue and indicates that German airports make up almost half of the top ten. A clear challenge for those responsible in the aviation industry.
