Vilnius: Europe's Green Capital 2025 - Discover the real Lithuania!

Lithuania, a pristine country less than two hours' flight from Germany, is becoming increasingly popular with travelers. The country offers picturesque oak forests, over 6,000 lakes and wild beaches, far away from mass tourism. Particular focus is on Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, which was voted Europe's best travel destination in 2025 by Lonely Planet. Holiday Pirates reports, that Vilnius will also hold the title of “Green Capital of Europe”, a prestigious award established by the European Commission in 2010.

This title recognizes cities that have demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. The requirement is a minimum population of 100,000 inhabitants. Vilnius currently has 612,000 inhabitants and will set new standards by taking over the title from Valencia, awarded in 2024. Travel reporter informed on the evaluation criteria, which include, among other things, air quality, biodiversity and sustainable land use.

A green role model

Vilnius plans to become climate neutral by 2030. The city will achieve this through a series of enhancement measures, including the planting of 100,000 trees and 300,000 vines. Additionally, Vilnius has 61% green spaces, which is an impressive number according to the Husqvarna City Green Space Index (HUGSI). The infrastructure is also to be improved: a network of 140 km of protected cycle paths will be supplemented by a further 19 km by 2030.

The city relies on renewable energy sources, including quiet trolleybuses that draw power from overhead wires. Planned measures in local transport include 12 new lines and the conversion to solar energy. For those who enjoy hiking, there is a network of 1,490 km of hiking trails, with 25% of these trails currently being used on foot. The city has set itself the goal of increasing this share to 29% by 2030.

Affordable travel

Another advantage for travelers is the affordable cost of living in Lithuania, which is about 25% cheaper than in Germany. A beer (0.5 l) costs around €1.50 in Lithuania. In addition, return flights to Lithuania are available from just €48, making the destination even more attractive.

The old town of Vilnius is one of the most beautiful baroque cities in Europe and attracts many visitors with its historical charm. An interesting fact: the former city prison in Vilnius served as the backdrop for the popular series “Stranger Things”. With a variety of natural and cultural experiences, Vilnius becomes a particularly attractive destination for 2025.
