Volkswerft Stralsund: A new glimmer of hope for shipbuilders?
The Volkswerft in Stralsund has formed the industrial backbone of the city for many decades and is an important location for maritime innovations. In spring 2022, the city of Stralsund acquired the site for 16.5 million euros and has since been developing a maritime business park. Currently, this park covers an area of 34 hectares, which is operated and managed by the city. Mayor Alexander Badrow (CDU) is pursuing the goal of creating at least 1,000 jobs, but the implementation of the plans remains uncertain as it is difficult for major companies to settle there. NDR reports that the running costs for operating the business park are around 500,000 euros per month.
A major obstacle was the failure of the settlement plans of the Norwegian Fosen Werft GmbH in August 2024 and the cancellation of the Rostock offshore turbine manufacturer EEW in April 2025. Trade unionist Heiko Messerschmidt emphasizes the urgency of viable concepts for the shipyard site. Despite these setbacks, 20 companies have already settled on the site since the purchase, including Strela Shiprepair and Ostseestaal, creating around 250 jobs. An interest group of shipbuilding companies was also founded that produces components for government and naval ships as well as yachts.
Outlook and challenges
However, critics are calling for a revision of the usage concept for the maritime business park because the current plan does not show the desired progress. An application to review the usage concept was referred to the shipyard committee in the last town hall. It is demanded that the city quickly negotiate lease agreements with the community of interest and thus pave the way for further developments.
Mayor Badrow is also planning to develop a new district between the Meereseum and the Rügen Bridge, which could offer additional opportunities for economic growth. The city's commitment and the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Association's forecasts indicate potential significant growth.
