Cycling holidays are becoming increasingly popular in Germany, with the Weser cycle path standing out as the most popular long-distance cycle route in the country. According to a current ranking by BeyondCamping, which is based on over 700 cycle paths and their Google searches from 2024, the Weser cycle path achieves an average of 18,100 monthly searches and with this number leaves other prominent cycle paths behind. The Elbe Cycle Path follows with 14,800 searches, while the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path and the Mosel Cycle Path generate 10,700 and 10,200 monthly searches.

The Weser cycle path stretches over a total length of around 520 kilometers from Hann. Münden on the Weser to Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast and draws cyclists through various attractive landscapes, including the Weserbergland and the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Petra Wegener, spokeswoman for the Weser cycle path information center, emphasizes the continuous quality and marketing work that is essential for the continued attractiveness of the cycle path.

The route and its attractions

The route of the Weser cycle path is divided into eight stages, with the average daily distance for cyclists being around 70 kilometers. The route is considered easy, with only 524 meters of elevation gain, which appeals to many cyclists. A high target group is people over 45 years of age, many of whom use pedelecs or e-bikes. Sustainable travel by train is also possible at 17 stations along the route.

The Weser cycle path impresses with an idyllic river valley, rolling hills, historic towns and numerous sights. The prominent stages include:

  • Hann. Münden nach Höxter (71 km): Benediktinerkloster Bursfelde und Schloss Corvey.
  • Höxter nach Hameln (68 km): Wasserschloss Bevern und die Stadt Bodenwerder, bekannt durch den Baron von Münchhausen.
  • Hameln nach Minden (70 km): Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Schloss Bückeburg und das Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal.
  • Minden nach Nienburg (58 km): Wasserburg und die Spargelstadt Nienburg.
  • Nienburg nach Verden (62 km): Johannis-der-Täufer-Kirche und der Wassererlebnispark Drakenburg.
  • Verden nach Bremen (57 km): St.-Sigismund-Kirche und verschiedene Bremer Attraktionen.
  • Bremen nach Nordenham (78 km): Historische Weserpromenade, die in Nordenham endet.
  • Bremerhaven nach Butjadingen (optional): 37 km durch eine malerische Küstenlandschaft, die am Nordsee-Deich endet.
