About the stepwell of Panna Meena Ka Kund in Jaipur
The Jaipur Stepwell in Amer is a square well (Baori or Baoli) with eight levels of diamond-shaped, criss-crossing steps leading to a deep, green pool of water.
The Jaipur stepwell was built in the 16th century by Maharaja Jai Singh to provide an ingenious method of storing rainwater from the seasonal monsoon. This gave the citizens of Amer access to fresh water during the dry season and served as a central meeting point for people in the community.
The design of Panna Meena Ka Kund is impressive to say the least.
This practical stepwell design features a series of symmetrical steps over rounded niches, allowing access to the well water regardless of water level. Although it is rarely used today, the beauty of the design attracts many visitors who would like to take a shot with the stepwell backdrop.

Where is the Stepwell of Jaipur (Panna Meena Ka Kund)?
The famous stepwell near Jaipurl is actually located near Kheri Gate in Amer, just a short walk from Amer Fort. Contrary to usual first impressions, the Jaipur Stepwell is not located within the fort premises, so the visit is free.
However, since the stepwell is so close to Amer Fort, it is a good idea to combine it with a trip to the fort or the famous Jaipur Wall.
For convenience, I have pinned the exact location of Jaipur Stepwell below. You can also add the pin to your Google Maps app to make navigation easier. Otherwise, I have also written detailed instructions below.
How to get to stepwell near Jaipur?
The best way to get to this beautiful orange baoli near Jaipur is to book the famous Jaipur Amer Fort Walking Tour. This is currently the top-rated heritage tour in Jaipur and includes a walk of the four followed by a visit to the stepwell.
The tour costs just 1,100 rupees, which is great value for money and cheaper than booking a guide at the fort.

Independent option
To get to the Jaipur Stepwell, you first need to make your way to Amer Fort, which is located just 12 kilometers north of Jaipur Junction. For directions to the fort, I have listed the options and prices below.
Once you arrive at the parking lot right next to the moat opposite the fort entrance, you will have to walk for about 15 to 20 minutes to get to the stepwell. Alternatively, there are many rickshaw drivers in the car park who would be happy to give you a lift.
If you prefer to walk, walk along Amer Road a little longer than the length of the ditch and turn left at the Gandhi Chowk junction. Continue on this quiet road for 200 meters before turning right just past the Ganesh Temple. The Jaipur Stepwell is just 100 meters up the road. If you have trouble finding it, Amer locals will point you in the right direction.

How to get to Jaipur Fort
If you're not at Amer Fort yet, the following options will get you there.
Rickshaw: You can take a rickshaw pretty much anywhere in Jaipur to take you to Amer Fort. Expect to pay around 200-250 rupees one way. Most rickshaw drivers will probably try to convince you to take a tour once you're there.
Uber: Using Uber to get from A to B is a good option for reliable and affordable transportation. The cost from Jaipur to Amer is usually between 250 and 350 rupees for a one-way trip.
Amer Fort Tour Including Jaipur Stepwell + Transfer: If you prefer a guided tour to Amer Fort, this walking tour with rickshaw transfer is a good choice for around $19. This trip includes hotel pickup/drop-off, an English-speaking guide at the fort, and a stop at the famous Panna Meena Stepwell (Jaipur Stepwell).
Bus to Amer Fort: There are regular buses that depart from Hawa Mahal in the old town. These cost just 15 rupees one way or 25 rupees for an air-conditioned bus. This is the best option for travelers on a budget.
Rent a Motorbike: This is probably the least popular option for travelers in Jaipur. However, if you want to explore the forts on the outskirts of the city, you can save some money by renting a motorbike or scooter. Expect to pay 300-400 rupees per day for the cheapest motorcycle rental.

What to Expect at Jaipur Baoli
The stepwell of Panna Meena Ka Kund is a little different from many other popular and grandiose stepwells in Rajasthan.
This Jaipur Stepwell is much smaller and surprisingly quite remote. Despite being a staple on Rajasthani travel social media feeds, there wasn't even a single other tourist here when I visited in peak season.

I am sure that when you arrive you will meet the lone guard patrolling the stepwell of Panna Meena Ka Kund. Some other blogs written a few years ago claimed it was free to walk down the steps to take photos and explore the area. Unfortunately, the guard on duty now prohibits anyone from climbing down without “permission”.
However, I was told by another traveler that it is possible to bribe this guard with 150-200 rupees to give you permission to explore. I decided not to bribe him and instead take some photos of the top steps. If you do, let me know how it goes!
To be honest, when I first arrived at Jaipur Stepwell I was a little overwhelmed. Don't get me wrong though, it certainly wasn't disappointing and I would definitely go back.
Rather, my high expectations were due to a confusion between the Jaipur Stepwell and the Chand Baori in neighboring Abhaneri. Both stepwells feature the same arrangements of pyramidal steps and have a very similar archaeological design. However, Chand Baori is a much larger stepwell with a total of 3500 steps!
