The area around Munich offers numerous opportunities for weekend trips to fascinating natural landscapes, cities and nature parks. Impressive mountains, sparkling lakes and dense forests are all within an hour's drive. For ambitious travelers, glacial lakes and national parks are even accessible within a radius of up to five hours.

Driving to the southern regions is particularly popular. The city of Brescia in Lombardy can be reached after about five hours by car. Visitors can expect historic landmarks such as an impressive opera house, Roman-era ruins, a majestic castle and ornate churches. Nature is also just a stone's throw away; Lake Garda and Lake Iseo can be reached in just 30 minutes.

Diverse excursion destinations

Hiking enthusiasts will find fun in the Palatinate Forest, which is only about 4.5 hours away from Munich. This region is known for its red sandstone cliffs and a variety of hiking trails, including the Dahner Felsenpfad and the German-French Castle Trail.

Carinthia, Austria, is also an excellent choice for an active stay. In just 3.5 hours from Munich, visitors can get there, where numerous swimming lakes and attractive hiking and cycling opportunities in nature can be found. Lake Millstätter See is considered particularly clear and is suitable for swimming early in the year.

Another notable destination is the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park in South Tyrol, which is around four hours from Munich. This region extends over 25,453 hectares and offers a breathtaking backdrop that extends from Lake Braies to Toblach in Hochpustertal and Alta Badia. With its variety of hiking trails and natural beauty, this park attracts nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.

Attractions in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park

This nature park is one of the largest protected areas in South Tyrol and also includes the communities of Abtei, Enneberg, Wengen, Olang, Toblach and Braies. Places such as the Pragser Wildsee and the Plätzwiese, which invite you to actively explore, are particularly popular. There are four themed trails that offer visitors a special experience in nature:

  • Naturerlebnisweg Lärchensteig (oberhalb von St. Kassian)
  • Themenweg Toblacher See
  • Lehrpfad Maitequellen
  • Naturerlebnisweg „Tru dal’ega“ (beim Naturparkhaus in St. Vigil in Enneberg)

Activity options are diverse and range from hikes and mountain bike tours to the Plätzwiese in summer to touring and cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes in winter. In order to protect the nature park, a traffic concept was introduced, which is necessary given the high number of visitors.

The Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park was founded in 1980 and offers height differences of up to 1,929 meters. The nature park house in St. Vigil in Enneberg is the central information point for active experiences.
