Tallink charters Romantika”: New ferry connections to Algeria!

The Estonian shipping company Tallink has announced that it is chartering the cruise ferry “Romantika” to the Algerian Madar Maritime Company for nine months. This agreement will come into force on May 31, 2025 and will allow “Romantika” to start two weekly connections between Spain and Algeria. The ferry will operate under the brand name “Andalouza” and destination ports are Alicante and Almería in Spain and Oran and Mostaganem in Algeria. This decision demonstrates the company's flexibility in a volatile economic environment and could have a positive impact on Tallink Silja Line's financial results, as CEO Paavo Nõgene emphasizes.

The “Romantika” measures 193 meters and was built in Finland in 2002. As the first ferry commissioned specifically for Tallink Silja, it previously served routes in the Baltic Sea, including between Helsinki, Stockholm and Riga. With the new charter agreement, Tallink can now respond to developments on its routes and offers the opportunity to use unnecessary vessels for additional revenue.

Expanded options and long-term prospects

In addition to chartering the “Romantika”, Tallink has agreed on the possibility of extending the contract for two further periods of six months each. In this way, the company remains flexible and can adapt to market conditions. In addition to the “Romantika”, Tallink also recently extended the charter contract for the “Silja Europa” until the end of January 2026. This ferry is currently used as floating accommodation in Rotterdam. Another Tallink ship, the “Galaxy”, is also on long-term charter in the Netherlands.

The decision to charter out could also represent a strategic step in a challenging market landscape. Tallink actively monitors developments on its routes and continually looks for opportunities to effectively utilize idle vessels. This could not only increase operational efficiency but also maximize returns.

Overall, the chartering of the “Romantika” demonstrates Tallink’s strategic foresight in terms of operational adjustments and maximizing business opportunities.
