Gladbeck is planning a new street name: Alanya circular traffic or Alanya-Weg?

The city of Gladbeck takes the focus of its long -standing town twinning with Alanya and submits an application for a new street name. The "Social Alliance" faction (BIG and DKP) then submitted a proposal in the town hall to name a street after the Turkish city. This is another step towards strengthening international relations and cultural exchange that has been visible in Gladbeck for many years through several street racing.

The existing roads, which are named after international partner cities, are among other things the Marcq-en-baroeul-Straße in France and Schwechater Straße in Austria. Volkan Akçay, as a knowledgeable citizen, emphasizes that these names are essential for the appreciation and international connection of the city of Gladbeck. The partnership with Alanya has existed since 1993 and has so far received little attention in the cityscape.

suggestions for the name of the street

A proposal of the application provides for the term "Alanya-Reveit" in the course of the conversion of the country road, with a stylized Alanya castle as a symbol in the center. Alternatively, the “Alanya-Weg” could serve as a new name for the promotion path to the Mottbruchhalde. These ideas met with interest, but are associated with legal and organizational hurdles that must be taken into account in the implementation.

The application will be dealt with in the upcoming meeting of the main and finance committee. The project is examined in coordination with the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR).

activities in the sign of the city partnership

The city partnership with Alanya is promoted by active citizens in the Freundeskreis Alanya, who contributes to deepening the connections between the cities. Particular attention is paid to the exchange of school and medical groups as well as trips that intensify the contact between the countries. The Heisenberg-Gymnasium in Gladbeck, for example, maintains contacts with the Latymer School in Enfield, which takes into account the traditions of student exchange.

A meeting of actors from Gladbeck city twinning took place on June 30, 2023 in the town hall. The aim of this meeting was to bring private individuals, clubs, schools and organizations together and to promote exchange. The participants agreed that such regular meetings should be continued in the long term. The Freundeskreis Marcq-en-baroeul organizes monthly meetings that serve to maintain culture and language.

The city twinning in Gladbeck are diverse. In addition to Alanya, the city has connections to cities as well as Marcq-en-baroeul, Schwechat, Enfield, Fushun and Wodzislaw. The youth council Ole Steiner expressed his interest in the continuation and intensification of these friendships at the meetings. In addition, the Freundeskreis activists are looking for other colleagues to expand international relationships. Interested parties can contact Eva Klein.

The people mentioned are confident that the application and the associated discussion about a street naming for Alanya in Gladbeck create a valuable connection and visibility of a longstanding friendship.
