Literary evening with Dr. Azouz Begag: Escape, hope and opportunities
On June 4, 2025, an event by the Literary Salon of the RPTU Landau will take place at 7 p.m. in the Small Hall of the Art Nouveau Festival Hall in Landau. The focus is on the French children's book author Dr. Azouz Begag, who is expected as a guest speaker. Admission is from 6:30 p.m.
Begag, who has a doctorate in economics and a former minister for equal opportunities, will read from his travelogue "Né pour partir. Récit de Mamadou, migrant mineur de Guinée". The book, published in 2023, describes the escape story of the underage migrant Mamadou Sow from Guinea. This impressive story not only deals with personal fates, but also links socio-political issues such as migration and equal opportunities.
Award-winning literature
The work “Né pour partir” was awarded the prestigious Prix des lycéens allesmands on March 26, 2025 at the French Embassy in Berlin. This prize, which is endowed with 5,000 euros and is donated by Ernst Klett Sprachen Verlag, was accepted on behalf of Mamadou Sow. The award comes as part of a project that integrates democratic decision-making processes into everyday school life and inspires students about the French language and literature.
The initiative consists of two phases: In the first phase, students read three selected young adult novels and choose their favorite. In the second phase, creative contributions follow in the form of video messages that are shared via social media. Begag's novel tells the true story of Mamadou Sow, who, at the age of 15, travels alone from Guinea to France to get medicine for his father, who is suffering from cancer.
Event details and moderation
At the event in Landau, Dr. Margarete Mehdorn, qualified interpreter and connoisseur of French literature, will moderate the event. The reading is designed not only as a lecture, but also as a conversation in order to enable a broader discussion about the topics covered.
With a focus on the connection between literature and social challenges, this event will provide an important forum to discuss current issues such as migration and opportunities for equal opportunities. The numerous activities surrounding the Prix des lycéens allesmands also underline the relevance of literature in education and the importance of addressing social issues.
