MSC Cruises is investing 3.5 billion euros in two new luxury ships!
MSC Cruises today announced that it has ordered two new World Class ships from French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique. These ships, called World Class 5 and 6, are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and 2030. This order will bring the total number of World Class ships in MSC Cruises' fleet to six. The total investment for these new ships amounts to approximately 3.5 billion euros, a further sign of the company's long-term commitment to the European shipbuilding industry, Cruise news reported.
Over the last two decades, MSC Cruises has invested a total of more than 18 billion euros in France, underlining the importance of the market. Construction of the new ships will take place between 2027 and 2030 and will generate more than 20 million man-hours, resulting in the creation of over 3,000 full-time jobs. Over 500 French suppliers are involved in the construction process, supporting the local economy, such as Shippax reported.
Commitment to sustainability
World Class ships are considered the most energy efficient in service, exceeding International Maritime Organization (IMO) energy efficiency design standards. They will use alternative fuels such as bio- and synthetic LNG and are equipped with modern dual-fuel engines designed to minimize methane slip. The new ships also have shore power connections, which help reduce CO₂ emissions in the port. Advanced wastewater treatment and waste management systems are also provided, highlighting MSC Cruises' commitment to sustainable practices.
The ships combine elegant European design with a high level of comfort and offer a wide range of options for different types of travel. The new ships join the MSC World Europa, MSC World America, MSC World Asia and MSC World Atlantic already under construction and planned for 2026 and 2027. In total, MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique have had a close collaboration of over 20 years, during which 19 of the company's 23 ships were built.
The order of the two new ships is part of MSC Cruises' comprehensive industrial strategy, which also includes the development of several classes of ships. This strategy focuses not only on expanding the fleet, but also on implementing cutting-edge technologies to reduce emissions and improve the passenger experience. MSC Cruises is thus positioning itself sustainably in an increasingly environmentally conscious travel sector.
