A German man has been acquitted in Italy of murdering his wife. The Rome appeals court overturned the original sentence, which included a 26-year prison sentence for murder. The case, which revolves around the disappearance of the 38-year-old woman during a Mediterranean cruise in February 2017, caused a stir. The couple, an IT expert from Eberswalde, traveled on board the “MSC Magnifica” with their two young sons, aged 4 and 6. The woman was last seen in the Italian port of Genoa, where she was subsequently reported missing. Her disappearance was only discovered at the end of the cruise when the crew counted the passengers.
A turbulent course
The husband was arrested at the airport in Rome and taken into custody. He claimed that his wife disembarked during a stop in Greece. In the following years there was speculation about a possible marital crisis and possible depression on the part of the woman. During the investigation, a suitcase containing an Asian woman's body was also recovered from the Mediterranean, but it was not the missing woman.
After the man was sentenced to 26 years in prison in the first instance in 2022, the public prosecutor's office demanded confirmation of this sentence. However, the appeal court found that murder had not been committed, which led to the conviction being overturned. The man now lives in Ireland and has not yet served his prison sentence.

The man's defense lawyers expressed satisfaction with the appeal court's decision and emphasized that the initial conviction was unfounded. The case remains mysterious as investigations into the fate of the woman, whose body was never found, have so far been unsuccessful.
