The Journey That Changed Me: Mike Horn
Mike Horn and his list of achievements as a solo explorer are unparalleled, so we are honored to have him speak to us about the journey that changed him. The South African-born Swiss explorer and adventurer has probably seen more of the world than any other person on earth.
He swam solo through the Amazon, completed a non-motorized circumnavigation of the world at the equator, walked to the North Pole in the dark season (by the way, more people have been on the moon) and also managed to climb the world's 8,000 meter peaks - all 14.
He recently returned from Pakistan after attempting to climb and ski K2. Of course he has.
Mike Horn: The journey that changed me
Mike's list of accomplishments as a solo explorer is unparalleled, so we're honored to have him share with us the journeys that changed him.
Which region or trip impressed you the most?
For its beauty, Greenland – particularly the southwest and east coasts. I crossed and sailed around Greenland on skis. It changed me because I saw nature with such divine beauty, so untouched by humans, so wild and yet so beautiful. Through my years of traveling, I have learned to never take nature for granted.

I was surprised by the great satisfaction of sailing along the coast and seeing the country from a different perspective: being among the majestic beauty of the icebergs, the colors and the incredible wildlife.
How old were you?
Old enough!
Who were you with?
Some like-minded people who are passionate about nature.
Have you repeated the trip?
Yes and will do it whenever the opportunity arises.
Do you still have a big dream goal that you haven't achieved?
The moon!
Travel guide or not travel guide?
Absolutely not! No travel guide!
Are you a planner or a spectator?
I have to make some plans when I go on an expedition, but when I travel I see as I go.
Hotel or hostel (or camping)?
Under the stars is the only way to do this.
What was your most important travel experience?
Every trip is great and there is always something to take with you. However, remember that you must always give something back to nature, because without it we are nothing.
Why travel?
It awakens your senses.
Mike's account of his 2002-04 winter circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle, Conquering the Impossible, is now available.
