Cruise season starts: Costa brings shore power to Hamburg and Kiel!
Costa Cruises returns to German ports with the ship flags Costa Favolosa and Costa Diadema. From May 15, 2025, the Costa Favolosa can be seen in the port of Hamburg, where it will arrive with shore power for the first time this season. This measure is part of the company's efforts to reduce environmental impact during operations.
The Costa Favolosa is now starting the summer season after being successfully connected to the Hamburg shore power grid in September 2024. This allows the ship to be in port with zero emissions, representing a significant step towards sustainable cruising. According to Costa Cruises, the goal of net zero emissions in ship operations should be achieved by 2050.
Diverse itineraries and culinary experiences
The Costa Favolosa offers a variety of trips to Northern Europe until September 2025, ranging from eight to 23 days. Destinations include England, Scotland, Norway, Iceland, Shetland Islands, Lofoten, North Cape, Greenland and Svalbard. Travelers can look forward to long layovers of over nine hours, allowing them to explore destinations in more detail.
There are also culinary delights: typical local specialties are served on board, such as reindeer burgers from Greenland and cod salad from the Lofoten Islands. These dishes are designed by Italian celebrity chef Bruno Barbieri and promise a distinctive culinary experience.
Kiel becomes the port for the Costa Diadema
The Costa Diadema will dock in Kiel's Ostuferhafen every Friday from May 16, 2025. From there she sets off on eight-day cruises via Denmark to the Norwegian fjords. The Costa Diadema also received shore power in Kiel in 2024, which means that on-board operations are emission-free during lay times.
The international ports on the Costa Diadema schedule include Ålesund and Kristiansand, which also have shore power. These measures are part of the new “Sea Destinations” concept, which aims to enable extraordinary experiences at iconic locations along the ship’s route.
Olaf Kistenmacher, Director Sales at Costa Cruises in Germany, emphasizes the importance of shore power supply and the progress towards more environmentally friendly cruise operations. Together with Costa Favolosa, Costa plans to continue offering cruises from Kiel and Hamburg in 2026.
In summary, the return of the Costa Favolosa and Costa Diadema to German ports is not only a celebration for cruise lovers, but also represents an important step towards sustainability. With its commitment, Costa Cruises shows that enjoyment and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
