8 things that can be done at an 8-hour stopover in Auckland

We recently had a long stopover in Auckland between Tonga and our onward flight to Rarotonga. We are reluctant to miss the opportunity to see a little more of the world, and another stamp in our passports did this opportunity too well to miss it. Thanks to the friendliest customs officers in the world and a simple transport connection, we were able to make optimal use of our time in Auckland (despite the London weather) and still had time to relax and go on. Here is what we recommend for a limited period of time during a stopover in Auckland.

1. Climb the Sky Tower ... or jump down from him!

This should be your first point of contact. The viewing platform at 220 m is a great place to orient itself. You have to book in advance to make a Skywalk or Skyjump. I let her guess what it is all about ...

2. Visit the Auckland Art Gallery

New Zealand's best art collection includes a wide range of traditional Maori works of art and more modern styles. We loved the interactive LEGO installation that invites the audience to complement the already issued impressive constructions. (Kia certainly employed it!)

3. Visit the Auckland Museum

built in 1929 and has been developed since then, the architecture of the museum is only worth seeing. Inside, both contemporary and traditional exhibitions immerse themselves in the culture and the legacy of the nation.

4. Make an island tour

There are several to choose from that match your time frame, including Rangitoto Island for laval landscapes, Great Barrier Island for Golden Beaches or Tititiri Matangi for bird observations.

5. Drink coffee on the waterfront

Some of the best coffees in the city are located where the newly developed waterfront meets the central business district. I recommend Mojo Waterfront under the Meridian Building.

6. Picnic at the bastion point

The great view of the Gulf of Hauraki makes this park a perfect place for a picnic or a walk. Take the time to visit the MJ Savage Memorial Park nearby.

7. Stroll through Albert Park

The Victorian style gardens are usually full of students and sun worshipers during lunch break. There are countless monuments, monuments and works of art that are scattered around a central fountain.

8. Eat in the fashion -conscious Ponsonby

Enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner in a trendy restaurant in Ponsonby. The quarter is a dream for gourmets: pizza, tapas, sushi, curry or a Jewish delicatessen are just a few of the options offered.

with a little more time ...

stroll through the streets of the Devonport coast. Buy the Otara Market, New Zealand's best multicultural market. Swimming or surfing on the beaches of Karekare and Piha. Visit a free summer concert in the domain
