8 things to do on an 8 hour layover in Auckland
We recently had a long layover in Auckland between Tonga and our onward flight to Rarotonga. We hate to miss the opportunity to see a little more of the world, and another stamp in our passports made this opportunity too good to pass up. With the world's friendliest customs officers and easy transport links, we were able to make the most of our time in Auckland (despite the London weather) and still have time to relax and catch our onward flight. Here's what we recommend for a limited time stopover in Auckland. 1. Climb the Sky Tower……
1. Climb the Sky Tower...or jump off it!
This should be your first port of call. The observation deck at 220 m is a great place to get your bearings. You must book in advance to do a SkyWalk or SkyJump. I'll let you guess what it's all about...
2. Visit the Auckland Art Gallery
New Zealand's finest art collection includes a wide range of traditional Maori artworks as well as more modern styles. We loved the interactive Lego installation, which invites the audience to add to the impressive constructions already on display. (It certainly kept Kia busy!)
3. Visit the Auckland Museum
Built in 1929 and consistently developed since then, the architecture of the museum alone is worth seeing. Inside, both contemporary and traditional exhibitions delve deep into the nation's culture and heritage.
4. Take an island tour
There are several to choose from to suit your time frame, including Rangitoto Island for lava landscapes, Great Barrier Island for golden beaches or Tiritiri Matangi for bird watching.
5. Drink coffee on the waterfront
Some of the city's best coffee is located where the newly developed waterfront meets the central business district. I recommend Mojo Waterfront under the Meridian Building.
6. Picnic at Bastion Point
The great views over the Hauraki Gulf make this park a perfect spot for a picnic or a stroll. Take the time to visit the MJ Savage Memorial Park nearby.

7. Stroll through Albert Park
The Victorian-style gardens are usually full of students and sunbathers on their lunch break. There are countless monuments, monuments and works of art scattered around a central fountain.
8. Dine in fashion-forward Ponsonby
Enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner at a trendy eatery in Ponsonby. The district is a foodie's dream: pizza, tapas, sushi, curry or a Jewish delicatessen are just some of the options on offer.
With a little more time...
Stroll the streets of the seaside suburb of Devonport. Shop Otara Market, New Zealand's best multicultural market. Swim or surf at Karekare and Piha beaches. Attend a free summer concert at The Domain
