Davies Creek Falls is one of the largest waterfalls near Cairns in terms of height. Located across the Lamb Range near the Tablelands town of Mareeba, Davies Creek Falls is a bit far from Cairns but well worth a visit!

The great thing about this waterfall is that it's only a very short hike to reach the infinity pool overlooking the water flowing down huge granite boulders into the gorge of Davies Creek National Park.

In this quick guide, I want to share with you everything you need to know to take a trip to Davies Creek Falls.

Where is Davies Creek Falls?

Davies Creek Falls is located in Davies Creek and Dinden National Parks. The waterfall is a 1-hour drive from Cairns on the Kennedy Highway.

How to get here from Cairns

To get here from Cairns, I suggest heading north to Smithfield and taking the winding Kennedy Highway past Kuranda and the famous Barron Falls. It's a scenic drive along the way and there are lots of things to do in the Tablelands, so make a day trip of it!

As you drive past Kuranda and approach Davies Creek on the Kennedy Highway, look for a sign on the left side of the road. Take this left turn and from here it's just a short 10 minute stretch of gravel road that winds up the canyon and up the mountain to the waterfall.

The road is not paved, but you can easily tackle it with a two-wheel drive as it is fairly well graded, although a bit bumpy.

Alternative: Choose the best organized waterfall excursion from Cairns

Unfortunately, there are no tour operators offering excursions to this waterfall. This could be because it is a little further off the beaten path than the rest.

However, if you find yourself in Cairns without a car but still want to explore the epic waterfalls and swimming holes, I recommend taking one of the many quality waterfall tours to the Tablelands.

Below I have linked what I think is the best and most cost-effective waterfall tour from Cairns. It includes a stop at the famous Josephine Falls and the world famous Millaa Millaa Falls, to name a few.

What to Expect at Davies Creek Falls

When you arrive at the waterfall, you will immediately see the signposted hiking trail next to the parking lot.

As you begin your short descent towards the waterfall, you will see a small detour that leads to a viewing platform. From here you have a fantastic view of the larger part of the waterfall and the flowing rivers at the bottom of the gorge.

Further up the path to the waterfall there are also some good places to sit and watch the falls from above.

In the dry season it is also possible to swim in the many swimming holes further up the stream. There are signs to watch for changes in water flow. I'm sure it would be very dangerous during tropical downpours. It's best to keep an eye on the weather and don't swim if the current is too strong.

The Davies Creek Falls infinity pool

On calmer days, the best spot for swimming is a deep hole right at the edge of the top tier of the falls. It has a large overhanging tree and plenty of space to lay out a towel and enjoy the tropical North Queensland weather.

This is known as the Davies Creek Falls infinity pool. It is one of the most unique waterfall pools in Far North Queensland as this time the pool is located above the falls!

It may be a little sketchy in the margins, so make sure you use proper judgment and don't blindly follow what you read online!

Best time to visit Cairns and Davies Creek Falls

Davies Creek Falls flows year-round. However, things will be different in the rainy season than in the dry season.

Due to Cairn's tropical climate, most rainfall occurs between December and March. During these hotter months, waterfalls and natural rivers become a haven to escape the tropical humidity.

However, this waterfall can become quite powerful and is considered dangerous during the rainy season. When I visited this waterfall in the dry season, it had a good combination of current and safe swimming spots.
