Epic Road Trip: 3550 kilometers through impressive Iceland!

An exciting trip to Iceland is coming up to experience the breathtaking nature and unique landscapes. The plan is to travel with the ICE from Stuttgart to Frankfurt, followed by a flight with Icelandair to Reykjavík. There was a small misunderstanding when picking up the rental car at the airport because the rental costs were accidentally not transferred, which required advance payment. However, after returning, the costs could be reimbursed based on the payment receipt.

The first accommodation is about 100 kilometers from the airport. There are no real highways in Iceland; only one expressway leads to Reykjavík with a maximum speed of 90 km/h. Many roads are covered with black gravel and the most commonly seen car on the roads is the Dacia Duster. The rental car itself was also a Korean KIA. The entire process at the airport is digitalized so that processing can be carried out independently at machines.

Mobility and infrastructure in Iceland

There is hardly any rail transport in Iceland; traffic runs mainly on the streets. Interestingly, the gas stations are open 24 hours a day and offer both gasoline (95 octane) and diesel. E-mobility is also supported, albeit sporadically, as there are charging stations for electric cars. A modern parking system records license plates via video, and the parking fee must be paid within 24 hours via the app.

Another detail that travelers should note is that windows in hotels and hostels can only be opened a small crack. In addition, the toilet paper in Iceland is thin and single-layered. Cash hardly plays a role because payment is usually made with a credit or debit card. Tipping in restaurants is uncommon, while free drinking water is served at the table.

Natural wonders and sights

Icelandic nature is impressive and features glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, mofettes and geysers. Particularly noteworthy is the black sand of many beaches, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Sights visited include Öxarŕrfoss, Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Goðafoss and Barnafoss waterfalls and the Strokkur geyser. The Viking Village, Diamond Beach, Fjadrárgljúfur and the opportunity to watch the Northern Lights were also part of the trip. In addition, the animal observations of Icelandic horses and reindeer are unforgettable.

Another highlight of the trip is Reykjavík, where the harbor, old town and cathedral can be explored. Hugo Eduard Balazs, photographer and author, captured the impressions of his trip and is committed to the community. The photos from the trip to Iceland can be found on his private website. In addition, an exhibition with 30 pictures from the trip to Iceland will open at the German Youth, Documentation and Cultural Center in Reschitza on August 28, 2025.

In addition to great experiences, Iceland offers opportunities for relaxation. At Lake Mývatn, visitors can explore volcanic activity and visit the Námaskarð solfatar field. The Mývatn natural pool is a recommended excursion tip. It offers temperatures of 38 °C to 40 °C all year round and ensures relaxation in mineral-rich water sourced from a borehole. Entry prices are €51 for adults and €25 for children between 13 and 15, while children under 12 can swim for free.

Overall, the trip promises an unforgettable experience full of spectacular nature and cultural discoveries. For further information about the route traveled and the highlights Iceland offers, we recommend taking a look at the detailed guides from adz.news and islandtours.de.
