Things to know about hiking the nature trails of La Digue

The 6 best hiking and nature trails on La Digue
Without further ado, let’s dive into the 6 best hikes in La Digue. I put together this list to inspire you to visit and show you the incredible opportunities this island offers for outdoor adventure.

1. Anse Marron hike
Anse Marron has long been a remote, hidden gem, but has recently blown up on an international scale thanks to social media. This sheltered private beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches I have ever seen. Even better, you have to earn it, with a short jungle trail starting from L’Union Estate.
However, before you set off, it is best to know that tourists are strongly discouraged from embarking on this La Digue hike independently. Apparently I was told that many tourists get lost on this trail and need to be rescued and was told not to post directions for that reason.
Luckily, there are small-group guided excursions that will be your best bet. In fact, this particular trip to Anse Marron is one of the most booked and best-rated tours on the island of La Digue. It has 5 stars on Viator - one of the world's best booking websites, with a Badge of Excellence on Tripadvisor. The best part is that it only costs around €40 for a whole day!

2. Nid d’Aigle Hike (Eagle’s Nest) – Highest point on La Digue
The Nid D’Aigle hike, also known as Eagle’s Nest in English, is the highest point on the island of La Digue. The peak of Nid D’Aigle mountain rises 333 meters above the tropical Indian Ocean and is one of the steepest nature trails on La Digue.
The starting point for this trail is directly behind the Belle Vue restaurant. This restaurant is already quite high, so most of the elevation is covered on the very steep and winding concrete road on the way up. This road is also very steep and it is not a good idea to take a bike here.
The hike itself is very scenic and offers breathtaking views of the western side of La Digue on the way up. Overall, it's a fairly short hike, reaching the summit after about 500 meters (approx. 120 meters elevation).
The summit offers the best views you will find on La Digue. You have a clear view of the L’Union Estate, the Anse Source D’Argent and even the island of Praslin in the distance.

3. Anse Cocos hike
Another of the best beaches on the island is Anse Cocos. This beach is famous for its incredible natural swimming pool and blue waters.
There are two ways to get to Anse Cocos on La Digue, and both require hiking on nature trails. I covered both options in detail in my Anse Cocos travel guide.
The paths leading to this beach are very scenic and offer ample opportunity to observe endemic animal and plant species. In particular, look out for the illusive Seychelles flycatcher, Seychelles bulbul, Seychelles giant day gecko and the elusive Seychelles bronze gecko.

4. Hike to Romeo & Juliet viewpoint (unique viewpoint)
This next hike on La Digue is quite remote and was shown to me by my guide Henry. He has been visiting this place since he was a child, but in recent years a German wedding photographer has blown the place up with the help of some viral photos. He called it the viewpoint of Romeo and Juliet, but Henry prefers to call it his unique viewpoint.
The route begins on Belle Vue Road (same road that leads to Nid D’Aigle). Expect about 2 kilometers of hilly jungle trekking in total to reach the viewpoint. To get here you also have to navigate a maze of rocky jungle paths with lots of wrong turns on logging trails. Instead, it's a good idea to contact Henry on the WhatsApp number above so he can get you here.
Once you arrive at the Romeo and Juliet viewpoint (unique viewpoint) on La Digue, you will be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The east side of La Digue is my personal favorite as there are no residential developments there. Instead, you will experience untouched nature and incredible views over Grand Anse, Petite Anse and Anse Cocos.
At the end of the hike it is better to continue down to Anse Cocos where you can then take the shorter path back to Grand Anse to reach the road.

5. Anse Songe nature trail
The hike to Anse Songe is another great short nature hike on La Digue.
This trail begins just a few hundred meters from the entrance to Grand Anse beach at the southeastern end of La Digue. The route begins by winding through flat, sandy jungle before climbing over a short hill. Overall, this trail on La Digue should only take about 20 minutes, and you could even bike to the short hill, saving some time.
Anse Songe is a rocky beach that you often have all to yourself. This beach is somewhat shallow and there is a small strip of sand below a large granite boulder that is great for swimming and cooling off after your walk.

6. L'Union Estate
Although not technically an official La Digue nature trail, strolling through the palm forests and discovering the historical highlights of L’Union Estate is a great way to stretch your legs.
While many people choose to bike around the property, there are many scenic paths between each attraction that you can walk instead.

In case you didn't know, the property offers access to Anse Source D'Argent, La Digue's most famous beach.

How to get to La Digue Island?
Are you ready to explore the incredible hiking and nature trails on La Digue Island in the Seychelles? Are you still in the planning phase of your trip? Here are some useful travel tips, starting with getting to the island!
If you would like more information, I have gone into much more detail about the options for getting to La Digue here.
However, in general you have 2 options. Firstly, you could take the Cat Cocos (fast ferry) directly from Mahé to La Digue Island, which costs around €60 and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.
alt="Praslin Port Seychelles">
Otherwise, you should take the Air Seychelles sightseeing flight to Praslin and then take the Cat Rose to La Digue Island. This is a scenic option and includes a breathtaking low-level flight over the islands.

Where to stay on La Digue
La Digue is a fairly small island and you can get anywhere within 20-30 minutes by bike. You'll find many hotels on the west side of the island near the jetty, but only a few along the narrow coastal road on the mostly inhabited east side.
La Digue has a wide range of hotel and resort offerings, ranging from relatively 'budget-friendly' self-catering lodges to incredible luxury resorts.
Below you will find a short summary of the best tips.
More: The 9 Best Accommodations, Resorts & Hotels on La Digue.
Amazing Chateau: Hotel Chateau St Cloud (Mid-Range) I stayed at Chateau St Cloud on La Digue and I can personally recommend it as one of the best accommodation options on the island. This three-star hotel is perfect as a mid-range option as the location is excellent - just a little outside the main district on a quiet street that is close enough to both the incredible southwest beaches and the harbor. The staff are all very accommodating and the breakfast buffet is great. The rooms are very spacious and the hotel even has a pool and bar.

Waterfront Hotel: Le Nautique (High-End) Rated one of the best waterfront accommodations on La Digue, Le Nautique is a luxury offering that combines traditional Creole architecture with modern comforts like king-size beds and rainfall showers. Here you will also discover a fantastic outdoor restaurant and a beautiful garden setting.

Self Catering: Dream Holiday (Budget) Dream Holiday Self Catering is located at the northern end of the island, very close to the ferry terminal. This location is great as you are close to bike rentals, snack shops and even supermarkets on La Digue's main street. Dream Holiday offers queen rooms with air conditioning, TV, private bathroom and even a balcony. This is a great option if you're visiting La Digue on a budget, while comfort and location are still a priority for you.
