I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that Pink Beach Komodo Island is one of my favorite beaches in Komodo National Park and perhaps all of Indonesia. Yes, it's a pink sand beach, but honestly this epic place is so much more than that.

Pink Beach Komodo Island

You may be surprised to hear that there are actually a few pink sand beaches in Komodo National Park. In fact, the sand is one of the most popular beaches; Long Beach, is also a permanent light pink shade.

However, the beach that can bear the official title “Pink Beach Komodo Island” is a small, south-facing bay at the tip of the northeastern headland of Komodo Island.

The color of the water here is absolutely incredible. The way the pink contrasts with the turquoise water made me very eager to launch the drone to capture it from above as soon as I saw it.

But it doesn't end at the beach or in the air - Pink Beach is even more incredible beneath the surface. After diving some of the best dive sites in the national park, I still think Pink Beach's outer reef edge is just as good as the big names!

Why is it pink?

Similar to the world's other pink sand beaches, the pink hue is caused by microscopic organisms in corals called foraminifera. As these organisms break down, they mix with the white sand, “coloring” it pink.

How to get to Pink Beach Komodo Island?

People usually visit the pink sand beach on Komodo Island as part of an island hopping or boat tour in Komodo National Park. The reason is that this is probably the only way to see most of the highlights of Komodo National Park.

Unfortunately, no public ferries stop at Pink Beach or Komodo Island. Therefore, you need to book a “tour” from Labuan Bajo Port.

While this may be disappointing for independent travelers, rest assured that these tours are not your typical tourist trap. Rather, think of it as a convenient way to access all the remote locations in Komodo National Park.

The cheapest and best value boat tour I could find (including bartering on the Strip) is run by Bintang Tours. In addition to Pink Beach Komodo Island, this boat stops at the other two highlights including Komodo Island to see the real dragons and the hike to Padar Viewpoint.

Alternatively, if you want to see more of Komodo National Park on a multi-day liveaboard, you can book online from Labuan Bajo or Lombok.

Entrance fees to Komodo National Park

When booking a tour or even diving, it is common that you will have to pay Komodo National Park entrance fees in addition to your tour price. Since Pink Beach Komodo Island is part of Komodo Island and is therefore located in Komodo National Park, you have to pay 150,000 rupiah per person, valid for the entire national park for 24 hours.

I have written a detailed summary of all Komodo National Park fees in this post.

Activities at Pink Beach

Pink Beach is the perfect stop when exploring the incredible Komodo region. If you'd rather explore than lounge on the beach, I have a few tips for you.

Snorkeling

At first glance, you might think that a pink sand beach on Komodo National Park's regular circuit would be just a mediocre snorkeling spot. You're wrong. Pink Beach Komodo Island was one of my absolute favorite places to snorkel in Komodo.

However, you have to swim out a bit to get to the good stuff. About 150 meters from the beach is a steep coral slope with incredible marine biodiversity. There are a variety of different types of coral, schools of fish, rays and turtles.

Pink Beach Viewpoint

After admiring the incredible underwater scenery on the outer slopes, head back to the shore and head to the beach lookout at either end of the pink sand beach. Really, they're just small hills and it should only take a few minutes to walk up them. Regardless, there's a great view of the beach at the top, which, depending on the time of day, is the best place to see how pink the sand really is.

STAY IN LABUAN BAJO – ACCOMMODATION GUIDE

WHERE I STAY: CIAO HOSTEL As far as hostels go, this is one of the best I've found in Indonesia. Everything is clean and the accommodation includes free transport to the airport or the city. The hostel sits on a hill above Labuan Bajo and offers some of the best views in the city. This is also one of the hostels closest to Batu Cermin Cave in Labuan Bajo.

BEST HOSTEL IN INDONESIA – SEAESTA HOSTELEEven if you don’t stay here, visiting Seaesta Hostel in Labuan Bajo is a must. This place is crazy! It has an incredible rooftop bar and pool, a fully air-conditioned gym, and super comfortable bunks with thick mattresses. Although we didn't stay here, we chose to spend a lot of time here, relaxing by the pool and working.

CHEAP DOUBLE BUNK – SIOLA HOTELMy second accommodation in Labuan Bajo was the Siola Hotel. This one is super easy and more suitable for budget travelers. If you are a couple, this is the cheapest double bed you can find in Labuan Bajo. For $9 you get a double bed right next to the night market and harbor, free breakfast, and a private bunk with a bamboo door.
