Sail protocol week 6 - boat repairs in Townsville
Sail protocol week 6 - boat repairs in Townsville
Due to some damage caused by the heavy weather, which we were exposed to outside of Cape Bowling Green, we called to use the boat repair facilities in Townsville.
This was not an expected haul-out. Our original plan was to spend a day or two in Townsville to supply us with food for the islands. However, it seems that you cannot plan too far when sailing.
Anchor outside the Yachthafen of Townsville
While we would have liked to go to the shipyard to save some time, we had to wait a few days in Townsville. This was due to a local holiday that was not technically legitimate. In any case, most shops and boot facilities were closed.
There are not too many ways to anchor outside of Townsville. Most people who sail tend to prefer the more beautiful Magnetic Island that has many anchorages.
Fortunately, Malaika has a relatively low depth of 1.4 meters, so that we could anchor behind the break wall outside the Breakwater Marina in Townsville. It was a satisfactory feeling to bite the anchor after just a few meters of chain, especially after the gadgets of Cape Bowling Green.

Hiking in Townsville-Castle Hill Lookout
Since we could not come to work directly due to the holiday, we decided to look at Townsville.
The only immediate adventure option is to climb the striking rocky advancement of Castle Hill, who proudly stands behind Townsville and overlooks the sea.
The hike only takes a few hours for the way back, but offers impressive views of Magnetic Island, Cape Cleveland and even to the Palm Island Group.
If you are ever in Townsville, I would definitely recommend that you look at Castle Hill.

Sliding Malaika in Rosshaven Marina, Townsville
After waiting for the opportunity to get out for a few days, we finally had a defined time for it - at least we thought.
It seems that Townsvillers runs on island. Which is not as beautiful as it sounds when you want to carry out urgent repairs. We had to wait another and a half days at the dock of the shipyard before we could actually put on the loop.
When we finally got out of the water, everything went pretty smoothly. It took less than an hour for Malaika's fuselage sprayed cleanly and transported to our intended place in the shipyard.

A week boat repairs
The rest of the week we worked from sunrise to sunset. Our priorities were welding work on the front mast and the introduction of something additional ballast concrete into the anchor shaft.
We were also determined to locate the source of a dripping diesel corner from the large 1000 liter tank that plagued us.

While we were on land, we also hosed down the lakeside and applied a fresh layer of antifouling.
For these more urgent boat repairs, smaller trivial maintenance work came that are essential on steel boats.
If you build a boat, it is impossible to hang up the tools and call it ready. There is always something that requires attention. It is true that you can be frustrated, but as soon as you indulge in the fact that repairs and maintenance are an essential part of life on a boat, you will be all the happier.

Set the sail for Magnetic Island
Although this week was not the most interesting or exciting thing, in contrast to the sailing weeks in the Whitsundays, it was nice that Malaika looked brand new again.
It definitely felt good to be reduced back into the water where Malaica belongs. Especially after a whole week of sweaty, dirty work.
I can assure you that sailing in nice weather towards Magnetic Island tasted even sweeter!
