Anse Major Beach is located on the northwest coast of Mahé Island in the Seychelles. It is considered one of the most remote beaches on the island and is not accessible by road.

How to get to the Anse Major Nature Trail

The Anse Major Trail begins at the end of Bel Ombre Road near the village of Bel Ombre. If you type “Calm Sorento” into Google Maps, you will find the pin very close to the start of the Anse Major trail.

To get here you either need to take a taxi or get on the bus that runs from Beau Vallon (14 SCR) almost to the end of Bel Ombre Road. If you tell the bus driver you want to hike to Anse Major, they will know where to drop you off.

Since I was staying at the nearby Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort, I just walked Bel Ombre Road to the trailhead instead.

Anse Major Hike – nature trail

Hiking distance: 4.2 kilometers (2.6 miles) round trip
Duration: 1.5-2 hours there and back
Height: 206 meters in total
Difficulty level: Easy – medium

The Anse Major nature trail begins by climbing a short flight of stairs at the end of the road before ducking into a dense forest area.

This nature trail hike is quite flat throughout, with short undulating sections. The biggest elevation gain is the descent to Anse Major once you arrive.

There are also signposts at every possible turn on the path. So it is very difficult to get lost.

At a fairly fast pace I was able to make it from the end of the driveway to Anse Major in about 30 minutes. However, if you take time to enjoy the palm forests and tropical scenery along the way, you'll probably find yourself taking a little extra time.

If you get thirsty, there is a natural water source with clean water about 700 meters from the start. You will discover it next to a small bridge.

What to expect on the Anse Major Nature Trail

Along with Morne Blanc, the Anse Major Trail is one of the most scenic hikes on the island of Mahe and perhaps even the entire Seychelles.

Although it's just a short walk, it has a lot of variety. What I mean by that is that one moment you're walking through dense tropical jungle and the next moment you're walking along huge granite slabs overlooking the Indian Ocean.

For much of the Anse Major Trail you follow a large steep water pipe. This is a natural catchment area to drain drinking water to the people in the surrounding villages.

As you approach the beach you pass a small run down chalet and then a great viewpoint over the beach. This viewpoint is called Point de vue sur Anse Major.

You will find that there is a picturesque, private and secluded beach just in front of the official Anse Major beach. This has a small swing and is a great place to hang out.

Anse Major Beach

Anse Major is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches I have visited in the Seychelles. The remote nature and untouched paradise give it the feel of a deserted island. The soft, white sandy shore drops steeply into deep, turquoise water.
alt="Drone photo of Anse Major">
You will notice that the beach is lined with coconut palms and there is a cleared section just behind the beach with a small beach bar. These guys are super friendly and cook amazing food and serve cold drinks.

If you are not a good swimmer, I would advise against swimming at Anse Major beach. This is because the water is very deep and currents and waves can be extremely strong. Combined with the fact that this is one of the most remote beaches on Mahe, you have a dangerous combination!

Nevertheless, swimming is absolutely perfect in calm conditions like I experienced on my two visits to Anse Major!

The bottom is mostly sand with very little coral reef, so it's not great for snorkeling. However, you will often see some schools of fish swimming by.
