Where is Anse Major?

The Anse Major beach is located on the northwest coast of the island of Mahé on the Seychelles. It is considered one of the most remote beaches on the island and cannot be reached by road traffic.

If you do not feel comfortable while hiking on Mahe Island, you can instead book a guided natural path tour to the Anse Major at Viator. This guide is licensed and hiked over 1000 times to this beach.

How to get to the Anse Major Nature Trail

The Anse Major Trail begins at the end of Bel Ombre Road near the village of Bel Ombre. If you enter "Calm Sorento" in Google Maps, you will find the pin very close to the start of the Anse Major hiking trail.

To get here, you either have to take a taxi or get on the bus, which drives from Beau Vallon (14 SCR) almost to the end of the Bel Ombre Road. If you tell the bus driver that you want to hike to the Anse Major, you know where you can sell them.

Since I stayed in the nearby Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort, I just ran the Bel Ombre Road to the beginning of the way.

This nature teaching powers hike is quite flat consistently, with short wavy sections. The biggest difference in altitude is the descent to Anse Major as soon as they have arrived.

There are also signposts at every possible turn of the path. So it is very difficult to get lost.

At a fairly quick pace, I was able to make it from the end of the driveway to Anse Major in about 30 minutes. However, if you take your time to enjoy the palm forests and the tropical landscape on the way, you will probably take a little more time.

When you get thirsty, there is a natural water source with clean water about 700 meters from the start. You will discover it next to a small bridge.

What you can expect on the Anse Major Nature Trail

Together with Morne Blanc, the Anse Major Trail is one of the most scenic hikes on the island of Mahe and maybe even on the whole Seychelles.

Although it is only a short walk, it has a great variety. What I mean by this is that you go through dense tropical jungle at a moment and the next moment along huge granite slabs with a view of the Indian ocean.

For a large part of the Anse Major Trail, follow a large steep water pipe. This is a natural catchment area to derive drinking water to the people in the surrounding villages.

If you approach the beach, you pass a small run -down chalet and then a great viewpoint over the beach. This viewpoint is called Point de Vue sur Anse Major.

You will find that there is a picturesque, private and remote beach right in front of Anse Major's official beach. This has a little swing and is a great place to linger.

Anse-Major-Strand

Anse Major is one of the most beautiful and untouched beaches that I visited on the Seychelles. The remote nature and the untouched paradise give it the flair of a lonely island. The soft, white sand bank falls steeply into deep, turquoise water.

You will find that the beach is lined with coconut palms and there is a cleared section with a small beach bar directly behind the beach. These boys are super friendly and cook great food and serve cold drinks.

If you are not a good swimmer, I would advise against swimming on the beach of Anse Major. This is because the water is very deep and currents and waves can be extremely strong. Together with the fact that this is one of the most remote beaches on MAHE, they have a dangerous combination!

Nevertheless, swimming is absolutely perfect in calm conditions, as I experienced on my two visits to Anse Major!

The floor mainly consists of sand with very little coral reef, so it's not so great for snorkeling. However, they will often see some fish of fish swimming.
