About the Mahe Rock Pool

This incredible geological formation is located on the rocky coast of the island of Mahé. It is a salt water tapered pool that fills up with the rising flood. At low tide you can swim in the pool or even jump over the rocks.

The official name is Ros Sodyer, and it is a natural phenomenon that does not create man. You can reach the pools from Anse Tagamaka (more below) via a short natural peak hike.

After talking to my local friend Roddey, who grew up on Mahé, I have now learned that the locals do not like to call the "Mahe Rock Pool". This is because the official rock pool in the north of the island, which is known as Machabee Rock Pool.

In this guide, however, I use both names because most people who are looking for MAHE for the rock pool will be much more interested in the beautiful Ros Sodyer and not in the official Machabee.

TIP: Visit to ebb for the best experience.

The hike to the Ros Sodyer Rock Pool

Hiking route: 2.2 km back and for Duration: 45-60 minutes back and forth
Height (100 m total profit)
difficulty: Simple

The nature trail to the Mahe Rock Pool begins at the southern end of Anse Tagamaka Beach. At the beginning they have to go through a private property, which almost looks like they are going through the garden of someone. If you step in, turn left, go through the gate and you will see the way into the jungle clearly.

The hike itself is quite simple as long as you have general fitness. However, there are some hilly sections and some others where you have to climb a steel ladder to get to the next piece. This is by no means difficult, but it could deter some people.

The nature trail is very nice when you go through the jungle sections. Towards the end, climb the rocks with a view of the Indian Ocean. Go on and look for markings that show the way to the pool.

The Mahe Rock Pool (Ros Sodyer) only becomes visible at the very end, where you have to descend a rocky surface towards Ocean. I could imagine that this could be quite slippery after heavy rains.

What she expected from Ros Sodyer

After a sweaty hike to the rock bath, it was an easy decision to jump in directly to cool off! The Ros Sodyer rock pool is a perfectly round tide pool at the outermost edge of the cliff and shielded from behind through a rock wall.

The pool is very deep. I dived down to try to touch the reason and I would say that it is at least 3.5 meters deep.

I was quite lucky during my visit, because I had teased the tides perfectly (ebb) and I had the entire MAHE rock pool for myself! So I spent about an hour to cool down in the pool and jump from the wall behind it. The jump is about 3 meters if they start at the top. This is not a huge jump, but it is still fun.

Remember to always make a deep check when jumping on the cliffs!
