Souita Falls is one of the “lesser known” waterfalls in the tropical far north. Located behind rural properties in the hinterland of the Tablelands Plateau, this multi-tiered waterfall is a worthwhile stop if you want to take a short walk.

Since it seems like not many people visit Souita Falls, there isn't much information about it online. In this quick guide, I'll share my experiences and give you a little insight into what to expect and how to get here.

Where is Souita Falls?

Souita Falls is located in the hinterland just off the Palmerston Highway near the township of Middlebrook near Millaa Millaa. The waterfall is approximately 111 km or 1 hour 40 minutes drive from Cairns.

You'll find the access trail to Souita Falls just off Middlebrook Road, a narrow, winding road that connects to the Old Palmerston Highway. This road is paved and can be used by any type of vehicle.

How do I get here?

Google Maps Pin: “SOUITA FALLS”

Getting to Souita Falls requires a car as there is no public transportation or tours that visit this waterfall.

Depending on your plans, from Cairns you will either need to take the Kennedy Highway via Kuranda and into the Tablelands, or take the more direct but very winding Gillies Range Road instead.

The first option is great if you want to visit highlights like Kuranda, Barron Falls, Kahlpahlim Rock, or Davies Creek Falls along the way.

Alternatively, the quicker and more direct route on Gillies Range Road also takes in some other epic waterfalls and hikes such as: Millaa Millaa Falls, Windin Falls and the Crater Lakes.

Whichever route you take to the Tablelands, you must head towards “Millaa Millaa”. Next, take the Old Palmerston Highway South and turn left onto Middlebrook Road. Continue on this road until you cross a cattle grid. There is a small local sign with plenty of space to stop once you reach the track.

What to Expect at Souita Falls

The Souita Falls hiking trail is just 220 meters long and passes two cascading waterfalls. It is very accessible with a clear trail the entire way, although it is a bit steep on the way back.

I recommend keeping the noise down on the way to the waterfall viewing points as there is a chance of seeing a wild platypus.

After just 110 m, you descend to a cordoned off viewpoint that overlooks the first waterfall river. Unfortunately, you don't get a great view here as most of the river is not visible. There don't seem to be many good options for getting to the base either.

As you continue walking you will eventually reach the last waterfall, which is a bit smaller but gives you a better view. Again, access to all swimming spots is blocked, but you could probably use your imagination here to walk further to find a good spot to swim.

Fitzroy Island Resort – If you prefer to stay on one of the picturesque islands of the Great Barrier Reef, look no further than Fitzroy Island Resort. While you can do a day trip here, I highly recommend spending the night so you have more time to explore the reef, coral beaches, and rainforest hiking trails.

Gilligan’s Backpackers – The best backpacker option for a great atmosphere in Cairns is Gilligan’s Backpackers. That's because this one has a swimming pool, air conditioning, a full kitchen and a great common area to meet other travelers.
