Should I get a hiking guide for the Mourne Blanc Trail?

There are two ways to hike the Morne Blanc Trail, either with a licensed guide or independent. If you have followed this blog for a while, you know that I am a big fan of independent hiking and even choose to go for long 3-week hikes in the Himalaya without a guide.

For the Morne Blanc Trail, I would say that it would be very easy for most people to hike it without a guide because it is almost impossible to get lost. Sometimes it is definitely worth getting a guide. In this case, I would not recommend not to help you reach the summit, but to make the experience of the Mourne Blanc trail more pleasant.

hiking on the Seychelles is a great experience due to the incredible biodiversity and the endemic plant and animal species that are nowhere to be found on earth.

For this reason, I decided to hike the Morne Blanc Trail with my Seychelle leader and good friend Roddey, who heads the Guil-Rod Exotiques Tour. I was hiking the Mare aux Cochon Trail with him a few days earlier and I have to say that he is one of the best hiking guides I have ever run with. He knows absolutely everything about the history and nature of the Seychelles. I learned a lot from this man about the Seychelles, which cannot be found in any travel guide.

send Roddey an SMS or call it via WhatsApp and let him know that Olly from WE Seek Travel sent you because of a good offer: +248 259 6425

I am not paid to support Roddey's business. If a travel provider is really around with quality and authenticity, I would like to help instead to make his service known!

How to get to the trailhead

If you get a guide for the Morne Blanc Trail, arrange the entire back and forth transport. For those who hike independently, however, they have to make their own way to the starting point.

The start of the Mourne Blanc nature trail begins on the Sans Soucis Road. This street connects Victoria and the east coast with Port Glaud on the west side. It is a winding mountain road with remarkable stops, including the Mission Lodge and the Copolia Trail.

To get here, you can either stop at the Morne Blanc hike on an adaptable full-day tour through Mahé, pay a taxi driver or take the bus.

The bus is the cheapest variant and very reliable on weekdays. This only costs SCR 14. You can take a bus from Victoria and simply tell your driver that you want to hike to the Morne Blanc, and he will take you on the go at the starting point.

As soon as you made it to the Google Maps PIN below, you will see the signpost and the clear path to the summit of the mountain.

The Morne Blanc Trail: What to expect

Hiking route: 1.8 kilometers back and for Duration: 1 hour back and forth
vertical meter | Morne blanc height: 667 meters
Medium

The Morne Blanc Trail is a pretty steep hike that immediately rises from the street. The height difference is quite constant at the 900 meters to the summit. However, there are no climbing or technical sections, which means that the most difficult thing is the required effort. For us it was quite a breeze to whiz to the summit in about 30 minutes. This included stops where Roddey explained the properties, history and meaning of certain plants.

Morne Blanc is one of the most popular hikes on the Seychelles because it is accessible and easy to walk, but offers some of the most spectacular prospects.

However, it is not just the summit that makes this mahé hike so worthwhile. The path itself is very beautiful and leads through a sneaking path made of lush, tropical jungle. There is also a cool tree that has grown on a rock that you can climb into.

Mourne Blanc viewpoint: Best view of the west coast of MAHE

If you approach the summit of the Morne Blanc, you will slowly see how the plants change due to the higher location. Shortly before you reach a small wooden bridge, you will find some great views of the Morne Seychelles National Park, including Morne Seychelles self (highest point on mahe). Apart from that, the Mourne Blanc viewpoint is far from the main event. You will know that you have reached the end when you see the wooden platform with a steel safety barrier.

The Morne Blanc viewpoint is breathtaking on clear days. You will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the west coast of Mahe. From above you have a viewpoint on Therese and Conception Island, which lead the coast down to the Petite Anse on the South Cape. The beautiful lagoon of Port Glaud (near the Saucier Falls) is also visible from above.

Below are some photos that I took on a nice, clear morning on the summit of the Morne Blanc.
