Should I get a hiking guide for the Morne Blanc Trail?
There are two ways to hike the Morne Blanc Trail, either with a licensed guide or independently. If you have been following this blog for a while, you know that I am a huge fan of independent hiking and even choose to go on long 3 week treks in the Himalayas without a guide.
For the Morne Blanc Trail, I would say that it would be very easy for most people to hike it without a guide as it is almost impossible to get lost. But sometimes it's definitely worth getting a guide. In this case I would recommend it, not to help you reach the summit, but to make the experience of the Morne Blanc trail more enjoyable.
Hiking in Seychelles is a great experience due to the incredible biodiversity and endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth.
For this reason, I decided to hike the Morne Blanc Trail with my Seychelles guide and good friend Roddey, who leads the Guil-Rod Exotiques Tour. I had hiked the Mare aux Cochon Trail with him a few days earlier and I have to say he is one of the best hiking guides I have ever hiked with. He knows absolutely everything about the history and nature of Seychelles. I learned a lot about the Seychelles from this man that you won't find in any travel guide.
Text or WhatsApp Roddey to let him know Olly from We Seek Travel sent you for a good deal: +248 259 6425
I am not paid to support Roddey's business. If a travel provider really blows me away with quality and authenticity, I want to help spread the word about their service instead!

This is how you get to the trailhead
If you get a guide for the Morne Blanc Trail, they will arrange all round-trip transportation. However, for those hiking independently, you will need to make your own way to the trailhead.
The start of the Morne Blanc Nature Trail begins on Sans Soucis Road. This road connects Victoria and the east coast with Port Glaud on the west side. It's a winding mountain road with notable stops including Mission Lodge and the Copolia Trail.
To get here, you can either stop at the Morne Blanc hike on a customizable full-day tour of Mahé, pay a taxi driver, or take the bus.

The bus is the cheapest option and is very reliable on weekdays. This only costs SCR 14. You can take a bus from Victoria and just tell your driver that you want to hike to Morne Blanc and he will drop you off at the trailhead along the way.
Once you make it to the Google Maps pin below, you will see the wayfinding sign and the clear path to the top of the mountain.
The Morne Blanc Trail: What to Expect
The Morne Blanc Trail is a fairly steep hike that climbs immediately from the road. The difference in altitude is fairly constant over the 900 meters to the summit. However, there are no climbing or technical sections, meaning the hardest part is the effort required. It was quite a breeze for us to zoom to the summit in about 30 minutes. This included stops where Roddey explained the properties, history and meaning of certain plants.

Morne Blanc is one of the most popular hikes in Seychelles as it is accessible and easy to do but offers some of the most spectacular views.
However, it's not just the summit that makes this Mahé hike so worthwhile. The trail itself is very beautiful and leads through a winding path of lush, tropical jungle. There's also a cool tree growing on a rock that you can climb into.

Morne Blanc Viewpoint: Best view of the west coast of Mahe
As you approach the summit of Morne Blanc you will begin to see the plants changing due to the higher elevation. Just before you reach a small wooden bridge you will find some great views of the Morne Seychelles National Park, including Morne Seychelles itself (highest point on Mahe).

Other than that, the Morne Blanc viewpoint is by far the main event. You will know you have reached the end when you see the wooden platform with a steel safety barrier.

The Morne Blanc viewpoint is breathtaking on a clear day. You will be rewarded with panoramic coastal views of Mahe's west coast. From the top you have a viewpoint of Therese and Conception Island, which leads down the coast to Petite Anse on the South Cape. The beautiful lagoon of Port Glaud (near Sauzier Falls) is also visible from above.
Below are some photos I took on a beautiful, clear morning at the summit of Morne Blanc.
