A current study by the Swiss platform HOLLESSAFE evaluates the safety of travel countries in 2025. Europe is at the top, with Austria taking an outstanding position. With a fourth place in the global security ranking behind Iceland, Singapore and Denmark, Austria is classified as one of the safest travel destinations in the world. The HOSHOSSAFE index assesses the security of countries based on 35 criteria that include natural disasters, violence, armed conflicts, health infrastructure and militarization, and therefore does not reflect a tourist attractiveness, but the global security situation.
A total of 30 of the 50 safest countries worldwide are located in Europe. The study emphasizes that twelve European countries are represented among the 15 safest countries in the world. In addition to Austria, this also includes Switzerland in 5th place and the Czech Republic in 6th place. Other European countries such as Norway have also achieved high security ratings. The widespread risk of terrorism presses the safety level of France, which takes up 80th place worldwide, while Spain and Italy only cut off slightly better.
The most uncertain countries
The 15 most unsafe countries in the world are in contrast, including the Philippines, Colombia and Mexico. These countries are characterized by high willingness to violence and natural disasters. Other uncertain states are Syria, Yemen and Russia, which are considered dangerous due to persistent conflicts. The placement of the USA, which takes 14th place from behind in the list of the most uncertain travel destinations, is particularly alarming.Travelers should always consider current safety instructions that are provided by their Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While some countries, such as Qatar, for certain groups of travelers, in particular the LGBTQIA community, are not recommended without restriction (place 206 of 210 in the "Gay Travel Guide"), the results of the Hellessafe Index show that the security of the right to travel is a central criterion for choosing the travel destination.
