9 things you should know before visiting the Lovcen National Park in Montenegro
Read this travel guide with 9 things you need to know before visiting the Lovcen National Park in Montenegro.
No matter whether you are traveling through Montenegro or just visit the nearby Kotor or Budva for a day, our two, you should add the beautiful Lovcen National Park (Lovćen) to your list of sights.
In this short guide, I will tell you 9 things that you should know before your visit, which should answer most of your questions about how to get there, the expected things and more!
1. You can visit the Lovcen National Park on a day trip from Kotor or Budva
Montenegro is a small country. The most important tourist centers of the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) and Budva are just a short drive from the Lovcen National Park.
In fact, there is a very popular organized trip that covers most highlights in this part of Montenegros (including lovcen) on just one big 12-hour day!
This day trip begins in Kotor, but pick -up is also possible in Tivat, Budva and Herceg Novi. You visit the beautiful mountain Lovćen, the former capital of Cetinje, a boat trip on the Crnojevica River and a tour of Sveti Stefan.

2. From the Lovcen summit you can see almost completely Montenegro
I mentioned that this country is small? Okay, you understand it. But from the summit of the Lovcen mountain they really see the whole country!
The mountain Lovćen rises 1749 meters from the Adriatic table and its summit offers an uninterrupted 360-degree view of Montenegro.
The view from the summit ranges from the bay of Kotor in the northwest to the Albanian Alps in the east. On a clear day, the Durmitor mountains dominate the northern horizon, and they have a wide view over the Azul-colored water of the Adriatic in the south.

3. The Berg Lovcen is also called the Black Berg
Did you know that the mountain Lovcen inspired the contemporary (and Italian) name Montenegros? Montenegro or Crna Gora in the national language means literally translated "Schwarzer Berg".
The roots come from the incredibly dense forests of the Lovcen national park, which form a dark color. These mountains are an important landmark for the Montenegrin population.
4. On the summit you will find the mausoleum of Petar II. Petrović-Njegoš
Today most locals visit the Lovcen National Park to pay respect to the famous former Prince-Bishop Petar II. Petrović-Njegoš, or rather as NJegoš.
njegoš is perhaps the most famous poet, philosopher or ruler in Montenegrin history. He is primarily known for his poetic philosophy and his role in the defense of Montenegros against the Turks.
Today his body rests on the summit in a beautiful, specially built mausoleum, which is definitely worth a visit.

If you want to visit the Lovcen summit, you must pay an additional 5 euros (including entry into the mausoleum). However, students can pay 2.50 euros for the mausoleum (without reduction in general entry).

The Lovcen National Park is one of the most species-rich places in Montenegro. Allegedly over 2000 plant species and the park are home to over 85 butterfly species and more than 200 different bird species.
