Traffic chaos threatens: traffic jams for NRW holidaymakers on the way to Holland!
The Netherlands is very popular with holidaymakers from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), especially in May, where public holidays and long weekends offer ideal opportunities for a short trip. The travel time to the various destinations in the Netherlands is usually between one and three hours. With the summer holidays approaching, it is expected that these trends will continue. However, travelers should be warned for the coming summer: traffic jams and traffic problems are to be expected when leaving the motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia.
A central problem is an extensive infrastructure project for which the Dutch authority Rijkswaterstaat is responsible. Comprehensive renovation work will be carried out on the A1, A4 and the A10 motorway ring from May to October 2025. This construction work, which affects bridges, tunnels and roadways, leads to closures and diversions, which can lead to significant traffic delays. For example, the A1 between Watergraafsmeer and Diemen will be completely closed in the east from May 9th to 26th, 2025, which will redirect traffic to the already heavily used A2 and A9.
Events and their influence on traffic
In addition to the construction work, there are several major events scheduled for June that could further burden traffic. Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary from June 21st to 24th, and the NATO summit in The Hague opens its tents on June 24th and 25th. These events attract hundreds of thousands of tourists and could result in additional highway closures. The SAIL event also takes place at the end of August, which also brings numerous visitors to the region.
Travelers are therefore advised to consider alternative travel options such as train to get to Holland. Despite track work at Amsterdam Zuid station, you should keep an eye on the rail connections. Before you start your journey, it is advisable to find out about digital warning systems and traffic information from the “Vaststaan of meebewegen” campaign. Holidaymakers should also allow more travel time, especially on the A1, A4, A9 and A10 routes and, if possible, postpone their trips to the region until late autumn.
In view of the current developments and the expected traffic situation, holidaymakers from NRW must be patient and develop a plan B in order to make their travel experience to the Netherlands successful.
