Flying over the south of France: discover the wonders of lavender!

The documentary “In Flight Over Southern France” celebrated its premiere on July 9, 2025. This impressive production presents the country from a bird's eye view and takes viewers on a visual journey across the region's breathtaking landscapes and cultural highlights. The documentary shows the famous white limestone cliffs of the Calanques, the picturesque winding villages and the sun-drenched landscapes that make southern France so unique. Particularly noteworthy are the impressive lavender fields of High Provence, which play an essential role in the visual narrative.

The lavender blossoms attract numerous tourists to the region every year. The flowering period varies depending on altitude, but typically begins in mid-June and lasts until the end of July, and in certain parts of Provence even until mid-August. The best time to visit is late June or early July when temperatures are mild. In the months of July and August, the splendor of the lavender fields reaches its peak, surrounded by golden grain fields and brilliant sunflowers. This natural spectacle is very popular, but high summer can lead to crowds that should be avoided.

The lavender fields of Provence

The largest concentration of lavender fields is found on the Plateau de Valensole, where harvest usually begins at the end of July. An equally well-known destination is the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, near Gordes, where the lavender flowers can be found directly at the monastery. Smaller fields dot the landscape between Apt and Lourmarin, mainly with lavandin, also known as spit lavender. For an even longer bloom period, visitors can head to the Plateau de Sault, where lavender fields bloom until mid-August.

In the Drôme Provençale, especially around Grignan, travelers discover smaller and charming lavender fields with a flowering period from mid-June to mid-July. Around Ferrassières on the Plateau d’Albion you can experience organically grown lavender flowers at altitudes of 1,000 meters. The Ardèche region also offers impressive views of the lavender fields that stretch between Saint-Remèze, Larnas and Bourg-Saint-Andéol. These fields are not only a visual delight, but are also used to produce high-quality lavender oil.

A visit to the region

The lavender fields explored are not only idyllic photo opportunities, but also part of a lively crazy culture. A popular excursion destination is the Lavender Museum in Saint-Remèze, which offers visitors deeper insights into the meaning and different types of cultivation of lavender. Cyclists on the ViaRhôna also pass these flowering oases and enjoy the unique landscape composition.

The documentary “In Flight Over Southern France” is available in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and will be broadcast until July 9, 2027. Tonal landscapes, culture and nature combine to create an impressive visual experience that will delight both lavender lovers and travelers wanting to discover the beauty of southern France.
