Moritz's last dream: Help for Peru after a tragic loss

On October 8, 2025, the memory of Moritz, a young man with a big heart, was honored in a moving memorial service. Moritz had the desire to work for poor and disadvantaged people, but unbelievably he was no longer able to realize this dream. Before his planned kayak trip from Linz to Istanbul, he spent Holy Week in Caylloma, Peru, where he spent time with Padre Franz Windischhofer, a dedicated pastor who has worked in Peru since 1980.

Moritz was deeply impressed by the living conditions on site, which were characterized by a low room and water temperature of 7 °C and where heating was unheard of. He experienced exceptional hospitality from the villagers and expressed his gratitude for the encounters in a brochure. The conversations with a man from his homeland left a special impression on him and awakened his desire to help the people in this region.

A tragic end and a wish fulfilled

The tragic circumstances that led to Moritz's loss shocked his family and friends. Instead of donations of wreaths and flowers, his family asked that donations be made to Padre Franz and his community. This gesture showed Moritz's big heart and his unfinished goal. Friends and relatives organized a memorial service led by Father Johannes Czempirek that drew over 550 mourners, including military police comrades and Red Cross workers.

A total of 5,000 euros were collected through the fundraising campaigns, which will benefit Padre Franz and the village community. “We thank everyone for their great sympathy,” said Moritz’s parents. The villagers in Peru are grateful for the time they were able to spend with Moritz and remember him with gratitude.

Padre Franz Windischhofer and his mission

Padre Franz Windischhofer, now 73 years old, worked tirelessly for the people of Peru during his long missionary career. With the fascination for missionary work that gripped him in his childhood, he was particularly active in an area that was challenging due to its altitude between 2,500 and 5,000 meters. His mission covers several parishes including Caylloma, Sibayo, Tisco and Imata.

Under his leadership, numerous programs were launched that provide support for the elderly, children and young people. This includes temporary food distributions and scholarships that help young people complete their education. He also has heartfelt stories to tell, such as the experience with a waiter who saved his mother's life.

Moritz leaves a lasting impression in Peru, and the connection with Padre Franz illustrates the mutual respect and hope that the two men shared. Padre Franz's pastoral service and the support of the people of Austria continue to provide opportunities to help and improve living conditions in that region. Donations can be made through the Linz Diocese Mission Office to continue the valuable work of supporting the people in these remote areas.
