Tourism in danger: Carinthian taxes are damaging the industry!

In a current debate, Tina Berger, member of the FPÖ National Council, was critical of the 2024 tourism report. The figures show that tourism in Austria records over 150 million overnight stays and secures tens of thousands of jobs. Berger emphasized that tourism is not only an important economic factor, but also an essential part of Austrian identity. However, she pointed out a dangerous imbalance, according to which more work in the regions brings less and less return.

Berger was particularly concerned about the planned new Carinthian tourism law, which provides for a stay tax of 4.50 euros per night per person, in addition to a mobility tax of 90 cents. She described these fees as a “punishment for holidaymakers” and a “slap in the face for Carinthian tourism”. She criticized the ÖVP Tourism State Council's unilateral approach as a sign of an undesirable development and as an expression of poor communication with the industry.

Criticism of the new tourism law

The FPÖ MPs are calling for a reduction in bureaucratic hurdles, an end to the flood of taxes and greater trust in local entrepreneurs. Berger emphasized that tourism policy should be based on the needs of the industry and urged that the concerns of entrepreneurs and employees be taken seriously. “It is not enough to simply pass laws that place additional burdens on the industry,” said Berger.

The 2024 tourism report shows the immense importance of the sector, which has clearly shown that it not only contributes to economic strength, but also to the quality of life in Austria. Nevertheless, the challenges facing the industry are significant. A sustainable solution is necessary to ensure the future stability and competitiveness of tourism in Carinthia and throughout Austria.

The ongoing debates and the increasing pressure on political decision-makers will show whether and how the framework conditions for Austrian tourism will change. Berger urges that the tourism sector is not endangered by additional burdens. “The future of tourism depends on how well we respond to needs,” she concluded.
