Camping in Saxony: Weather brings mixed results for the season!
Campsites in Saxony have had a mixed record this season. How Time reported, June was the strongest month with 187,795 overnight stays, an increase of 21.3% compared to the previous year. The positive factors during this period included summer weather, the Whitsun holidays and the start of the summer holidays in Saxony. Upper Lusatia recorded significant increases in overnight stays with over 30% and Saxon Switzerland with 22.7%.
Dresden and Chemnitz-Zwickau particularly stood out: in Dresden the number of overnight stays rose by 51%, while in the Chemnitz-Zwickau area an increase of 74.7% was achieved. In contrast, the season was less successful in May and July, with only 124,000 overnight stays in May, a decrease of 31%, and 216,000 overnight stays in July, a decrease of 8.5%.
Visitors from the region and challenges
After all, the data shows that the number of visitors from campers from Poland and the Czech Republic is increasing. However, the Bad Sonnenland campsite in Moritzburg reported fewer guests due to rainfall in the high season. In contrast, the Seecamping Zittau Gebirge remained independent of the weather and had visitor numbers that were similar to those of the previous year. Despite the challenges, experts such as the Central German Association of the Camping and Motorhome Industry expect a growth path for camping tourism in Saxony, after a total of 1.08 million overnight stays were counted in 2024.
A late start to the season, which only began at the end of April, also had a negative impact on the number of overnight stays. In addition, campsite operators face challenges, particularly due to rising costs for wages and energy.
Long-term development and popularity of the regions
If you look at the overall situation in 2023, MDR found that Saxony recorded around 1.1 million overnight stays on campsites, which means an increase of almost 200,000 overnight stays compared to the previous year. In a ten-year comparison, the number of overnight stays has more than doubled, and Saxony has experienced the largest increase compared to other federal states such as Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
The tourist regions in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains are particularly popular, where around every fourth overnight stay takes place. The Görlitz district has the most campsites, while the Bautzen district has the longest stays of an average of 4.5 nights. In contrast, some regions such as Dresden, Meißen, the Vogtlandkreis and the Erzgebirgskreis are less in demand. Northern Saxony, Central Saxony and Zwickau are among the least frequented districts.
| region | Overnight stays |
|---|---|
| Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains | about every fourth night |
| Görlitz | 22 sites with 1399 parking spaces |
| Bautzen | Average of 4.5 nights |

On a national average, campers pay 27.52 euros per night, with Hamburg charging the highest prices at 40.74 euros and Thuringia offering the cheapest overnight stays at 23.23 euros.
