Pink Beach Lombok – COMPLETE BEACH GUIDE

At the southeast corner of Lombok is a natural phenomenon known as Pink Beach Lombok or Tangsi Beach. Apparently there are only a handful (the exact number seems a little sporadic) of pink sand beaches in the world, some of which are in Indonesia.

Pink Beach Lombok gets its pink hue from a natural mix of crushed dead coral and white sand. Yes, the beach really is pink, and it's worth checking out if you're up for an adventure on Lombok's remote east coast.

Where is Pink Beach Lombok?

As I mentioned earlier, Pink Beach is a little far from the regular tourist attractions of Kuta Lombok. In fact, you can find it hidden in a small village in Sekaroh on the Ekas Peninsula.

Due to its remote location, getting here is a bit of a mission, but definitely possible on a DIY Lombok route or through an organized tour.

Below I have pinned the exact location to help you find Pink Beach Lombok.

How to get to Pink Beach from Kuta Lombok?

Since most people who visit the south coast choose to stay in Kuta Lombok, I will include a short guide here.

Expect to spend a total of approximately 1.5 hours on the motorbike over a 55-kilometer route of paved and unpaved roads to get from Kuta Lombok to Pink Beach. You can rent a motorbike practically anywhere in Kuta Lombok. However, make sure you buy a bike that is suitable for the long journey.

We paid 50,000 rupiah per day for a good scooter from the friendly owner of our homestay.

Directions

Google Maps has updated and correct navigation directions for traveling from Kuta Lombok to Pink Beach. The correct location is marked as “Pink Beach” and NOT “Pantai Pink”.

I would also recommend downloading the route beforehand as service is spotty along the way.

Begin the long drive by heading east on Jl. Senkol, the same road that leads to both Taanjung Aan Beach and the epic sunset viewpoint Bukit Marese. Instead of turning, drive on this road for about an hour up to and around the coast of Awang Bay.

Eventually you reach a long, rocky road through the Ekas Peninsula. Continue on the same bumpy road without doing any tours until you finally reach Lombok Pink Beach.

Pink Beach Lombok entrance fee (2019):

As soon as you arrive, you'll notice an old plastic tourism banner and a local fee collector eager to collect your entrance fee. Currently, the entrance fee to Pink Beach Lombok is 25,000 rupiah per person.

I found this a bit too steep just to visit a beach. But after the long drive I didn't want to turn back.

TIP: If you are traveling from the airport, I recommend booking a pre-arranged private transfer to the city. This saves you from paying ridiculous prices when you come out of the airport gate.

Alternative Option: Pink Beach Lombok Tour

Of course, if you're in a group or just prefer a guided tour, you can also book a full-day tour that visits the "secret" southeastern Gili Islands and Pink Beach Lombok. Although I didn't choose the tour option, it is actually one of the top rated tours in Lombok with over 300 bookings.

For what you get, this tour seems to be one of the best options in Lombok.

What to Expect at Pink Beach Lombok

After reluctantly giving up the 25km, we continued down the rocky slope where we caught our first glimpse of Pink Beach.

The beach itself is quite small and forms a horseshoe bend of pink and aqua contrasts. The water here is incredibly clear, even at low tide.

However, if you don't plan on spending a full day here, I would suggest visiting the beach at high tide. During this time the beach is actually pink and the water is deeper for swimming and snorkeling.

Epic eroded cliffs

After relaxing after the long drive, we decided to explore the surrounding coastal cliffs. This was one of my favorite places while visiting Pink Beach, and it reminded me more of Lagos, Portugal than anything I had seen in Indonesia before.

I would recommend walking around both sides to get a better view of Lombok's famous Pink Beach and some stunning views of the nearby islands.

On the right side of the beach you can walk all the way to a hidden cave that is difficult to reach and requires a bit of swimming. There are also some small but epic jumps into deep, clear water around this side of the bay.

Surrounding islands

Immediately after climbing the left headland, I regretted not taking a boat ride through this area of Lombok. This coastline is dotted with amazing islands that had me drooling when I spotted them from the drone.

Why is Lombok’s Pink Beach “Pink”?

Like me, you may be wondering, “Why is Pink Beach Lombok pink?” According to Rove.me, the pink tones on Tangsi Beach are caused by unique microscopic organisms in corals called foraminifera. As the coral collapses, these red organisms mix with the white sand, giving the beach a pink hue.

How “pink” the sand actually is depends on the angle of the sun and how wet the sand is. For this reason, it is better to visit at high tide when the waves caress the shores.

So is it worth visiting Lombok's Pink Beach?

If you are up for an adventurous day trip and want to see a unique phenomenon that only exists in some parts of the world, then the answer is YES.

Admittedly the road to Pink Beach Lombok is a bit long and bumpy, I enjoyed the coastal road and seeing this other incredible side of Lombok that I probably wouldn't have otherwise.
