Free train travel for 35,753 young explorers in Europe!
The European Commission today announced that 35,753 young people have been selected as winners of the current DiscoverEU application round. These travelers have the opportunity to travel by train across Europe for free between July 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026. This initiative aims to make it easier for young Europeans to explore the continent and promote intercultural contacts, such as EcoNews reported.
Tour participants have the opportunity to travel alone or in groups of up to five people. This not only promotes individual discoveries, but also shared experiences and exchange among peers.
The importance of the initiative
EU Commissioner for Youth, Glenn Micallef, emphasizes the significant interest among young Europeans in new contacts and discoveries. It also underlines the essential role of curiosity, openness and commitment, especially in challenging times for Europe. These values should be promoted through programs such as Erasmus+ and DiscoverEU to create an active and informed next generation. Loud the European Commission DiscoverEU is a crucial platform for young people in Europe.
Participants who receive their DiscoverEU passport will also benefit from a European Youth Card. This pass not only provides access to accommodation and meals, but also discounts on cultural events and local transport. Before the planned departure, numerous information events and DiscoverEU meetings are organized to prepare travelers as best as possible.
Who can participate?
The application round is aimed at young adults born between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007. Participants must come from one of the EU member states or one of the Erasmus+ associated countries, such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.
The DiscoverEU initiative mainly promotes train travel, with air travel only permitted in special cases, such as from islands or remote areas. Since DiscoverEU launched in 2018, over 1.6 million young people have applied and 390,000 free travel passes have already been awarded, giving many young people the opportunity to experience Europe up close.
